Taipei says it’s yet to receive formal notice as concerns grow over Washington’s commitment to island’s security

The U.S. is pausing a $14bn arms sale to Taiwan as it diverts munitions to sustain the war against Iran, exposing mounting anxieties over rapidly depleting stockpiles.

It comes just days after Donald Trump returned from a high-profile summit with Xi Jinping in China, a country that claims sovereignty over self-governed Taiwan and has threatened to “reunite” it with the mainland by force, if necessary.

Trump said he had discussed the matter of the $14bn arms deal “in great detail” with Chinese president Xi Jinping and would make a decision “over the next fairly short period”, breaking decades of U.S. policy that states decision on Taiwan should not be made in collaboration with Beijing.

Guess I’ll have to be the one who gets downvoted by the liberal imperialists and say this is a GOOD THING!

Taiwan would be better off if the US fucked off and stopped trying to use it as a way to undermine China. China is much less likely to attack a Taiwan that is just being annoying than one that is slowly being armed to the teeth right off its coast. The people of Taiwan do not need more guns. They need competent leaders that can negotiate with Beijing in good faith to rejoin peacefully and on good terms.

Americans who are so concerned about this should be more concerned about the fact the US is probably going to attack it’s 3rd country this year soon (Cuba) instead of whining about a hypothetical Chinese military action that has not happened, and absent the US forcing China’s hand, will not happen.

You do not have the moral high ground. You are making the situation worse by sending weapons not better. Take a good long look in the mirror. Look at what happened to other countries the US did this to (Ukraine). Stop slurping up the Anti-China slop like mindless children. The US is the bad guy. Not China.

Trunk know we can control the petroldollar and protect Taiwan at the same time. He’s probably trying to buy time, because saving the states from bankruptcy was a higher priority than saving Taiwan.

Americans eat is life depends on the Petrodollar and taxing the world though money printing to maintain itself. Without it we are bankrupt.

I think it’s more that Xi bullied him into it.

It’s likely that he made several points:
Nobody has actually suggested a scenario where the arms package would prevent or even slow down a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
All the US wargames show that the US has no chance of defending Taiwan.
      Trump’s trade war failed.
      His Iran war is failing.
Trump has burned most of his alliances.

He probably phrased all of that in fancy diplomat lingo but all the analysis I’ve seen says it was more of a veiled threat than a bribe.

I don’t think there is anyone left in the US government that understands diplomatic language.

I guess it’s some cheap bribe and "working with the demented elderly.

That’s right, third party voters and non voters are the difference between winning or losing an election. So the only sensible choice is to learn this lesson and run candidates they would vote for.

Are you serious? Do you think 3rd party voters are “centrist”? What third parties are you looking at? 3rd parties are on the ends of the overton window in the US not the middle. If the Democrats ran a centrist to court 3rd party voters then it makes sense they lost. Because apparently they’re morons.

They ran a “centrist” (lmao) because those are the policies that most benefit their owners.
