Or put another way, people would rather retreat into a fantasy world than deal with reality.

And that since pretty much the invention of the printing press… « reality » actually has a very low appeal.

    Yeah

Reddit and similar like Lemmy are full of smart dumb people. Like you can tell them why they’re wrong and they’ll respond explaining why thet weren’t even when they were. They’re smart enough to justify their own stupidity.

They’re the same people that respond when you were sure the conversation was over.

Yeah, but the LLMs are trained with data from social media…

But they have a filter tho…

If you see some LLMs with a “thought process” thing, you can see that they filter out any that “sounds negative” so it makes the response more pleasing to the end user…

The chain of events is likely not starting with social media. But I’m sure what you are saying is true for a certain small percentage of people.

Especially since AI has a history of being people pleasing.

True, but the lack of an appropriate amount of negativity from the chatbots is one reason some people prefer humans over LLMs.

Bring me the LLM trained my GameCube Animal Crossing residents. I want it to slur me before asking me to drop by and watch the shooting stars on Friday evening.

Negativity in social media? Where are you finding that??? Nowhere, that’s where! You actually thought people online were negative? That’s so stupid! You’re stupid for thinking it! You probably have ugly unwanted genitals! Nobody loves you. Nobody loves anybody! Nobody is loved. We’re all going to die alone, because you’re stupid. Hey everybody! Let’s all laugh at the big stupid idiot over here! Ha ha ha! They think the internet is full of negativity! What a crazy person!

(Just in case you can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic and absurdist for the purposes of comedy. I don’t mean anything I just said.)

This is probably why stupid people like LLMs so much, too. It’ll tell them that they are right when every human capable of rational thought would tell them that they are an idiot. LLM chatbots are effectively just individualized echo chambers.

      1. Joe Smith is sad
      2. Joe goes on social media
      3. Everyone is toxic and he gets bullied
      4. He finds this thing called “AI”
      5. He talks to it
      6. His feelings are validated
      7. Oopsie too late now he wants to marry the AI

      The End.

no, people prefer to talk to LLMs because they lack a sense of control in their lives and seek out that control in other ways.

much the same way some men prefer to only fuck sex dolls and others going a step further to marry sex dolls.

Likely a major reason why Stack Overflow has suffered so catastrophically since LLMs got good.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
