Its a small mistake but still: its 30.000 feet per minute, not second

30.000 feet per second is about 10km/sec which is closer to speeds of meteors crashing into the earth. At those speeds, that plane crash would have had enough energy to likely wiped out the entirety of Miami.

If it was travelling at a velocity of 30,000 feet per second it would have been vaporized by atmospheric heating. That’s substantially faster than asteroids collide at. That works out app 20,454 mph which is considerably faster than a Apollo rocket.

Honestly, i felt the audio wasn’t as bad as so many people are claiming it to be. Like yes its bad, but after seeing watching so much of palestine footage, its… not that bad. They suffered for like 30 seconds, and then peace.

If you listen to hind rajab’s audio, that thing is super devastating. Like imagine being 5 with your parents dead in the car with you, trying to explain to paramedics, imagine what those paramedics must have felt in that moment. All the agony, all the struggle. Like what thoughts did hind have while waiting for paramedics to arrive?

I think the reason this flight audio feels so scary to western audience is because, so many people have flown, and “it could be any of us”, whereas hind rajab and other palestinians live in a “war torn” country. Like it happens all the time over there anyways.

        Twitter.

It’s pretty on par with other airline crash audio. Yeah, super tragic and sad, mostly that things went from “hey, ATC, we’re good, but maybe not looking 100% right now…” To falling out of the sky within 30 seconds and dropping so hard they sounded like they might have pulled some Gs trying to bank out of the descent at one point. You can do everything right, and still get messed up. Icing is a real danger, and acts fast.

I found it pretty easily searching for “Florida plane crash audio”. Cnn had a version that cuts out right after it starts to go wrong, the actual one ends with “we’re out of time”.

It is pretty brutal imo. She knew what was happening and that there was no stopping it, though there was at least some denial. Can’t blame her though, going from a routine thing she did regularly, if in a bit of hairy weather, to being in a situation where it was almost certain she would die over a span of seconds. She spent more time knowing it was over than it took for it to go from normal to fucked and all she could do about it was declare an emergency.

Hope quantum immortality is real for her sake and she’s currently sitting in the Bahamas waiting for their return flight in a universe where she veered in a slightly different course that missed the worst of it.

The reason it’s at such a high pitch is that it experienced heavy icing, which killed the wings ability to generate lift. Once it started falling, it oriented itself in the direction with the least drag, forward.

They went from tolerable light icing to falling out of the sky in less than 3 minutes. Ice is very scary.

It looks like missile footage, except with a slow explosive with fire rather than a fast explosive with shockwave.

This particular video looks like it destroys the white car, but other angles of the aftermath show that the white car was a bit behind the explosion and that driver was OK but understandably shaken up.

It wasn’t. IIRC, it was descending at 30,000 feet per minute at its peak and was maybe coming close to Mach 1 at impact.

I also understand there’s some deeply NSFL audio floating around, but I haven’t listened and don’t intend to.

People are saying the equipment only registers a maximum of 32,000 feet per minute, but the aircraft was probably traveling closer to 60,000 feet per minute on impact, at basically terminal velocity for that aircraft.

I don’t know anything though, just parroting comments from YouTube.

The wings are there, just not clear in this screenshot. The horizontal stabilizers/elevators, however, are not present anymore. If the NTSB finds those I’m guessing that will be very useful for the investigation. Sounds like the plane was trying to get out of an icing situation they thought was manageable shortly before the crash.

I made the mistake of listening to the audio. They thought the clear icing was manageable and weren’t worried about it, but had some moderate turbulence they weren’t happy about, then entered an area where they were catching some precipitation. I suspect that the precipitation in what was already an ice situation is what very rapidly caused a loss of control. The time interval between “We’re looking for a smoother ride ahead” and “Mayday Mayday We are descending at 10,000 feet per minute” was very brief.

This one included no obvious cuts of silence and did have unrelated transmissions included, and included the radar tracking of the aircraft along with an overlay of weather radar. There was no indication of any editing for brevity, and the first radio call of genuine distress was “We are descending at 10,000 feet per minute” and not something that suggested a more gradual degradation of flight condition outside the mention of precipitation.

It really does appear that the situation went from “Uncomfortable but manageable” to “Already a disaster and getting rapidly worse” in a matter of seconds.
