once youve strained it a whole can of creamed corn gives you barely a third of a cup why isnt anyone talking about this
i think it has to do with government corn subsidies
edit you people arent getting it so ive created a diagram

look at all that blue thats wasted space between the creamed corns and it takes up over half the can
- Genuinely curious: why are you straining creamed corn? If you want corn kernels, why not buy that instead? - That’s what I’m thinking. That’s like buying buttermilk and complaining that there’s only half a stick of butter in it after you strain it!
- what - You can buy cans of just corn in water. Those are mostly full of corn, with water filling the space between. Creamed corn is a whole other thing, and while it has some corn kernels in it, it’s mostly meant to be eaten as-is or used as-is in a recipe. The liquid in creamed corn is not meant to be discarded. - am i being punkd are you punkding me - You’re not being punked dude. Creamed corn is a thing, you don’t strain it, and when you buy a can of it the can is full. This was a swing and a miss. - youre not making any sense AT ALL - I recommend you google creamed corn and make sure it is what you think it is. If that doesn’t clear things up then I have to assume you’re trolling now. - im so fucking sick of this

- What doesn’t make sense? - Creamed corn… you don’t strain it - why wouldnt you strain it dont you strain your peas and stuff - and when you buy a can of it the can is full. - FULL OF WASTED SPACE okay i get it the realist says the glass isnt half full its all the way full because its full of 50% water and 50% air but thats just semantics - This was a swing and a miss. - what

- Wait until you hear about atoms. - wow this goes deeper than i ever thought possible - LLM brain rot in action. No wonder OP is straining creamed corn

- I hate having to repeat this over & over, but chip bags are NOT 50% wasted space. They’re 50% larger than their contents, and then filled with 50% air for extra padding, so you don’t get a bag of crumbs. - You pay for the weight of the chips in the bag, not the amount of fullness. - my point is that everyone talks about that but no one talks about the same thing happening with cans of creamed corn despite cans being sturdy enough to not need padding - The cans are sold by weight of the content, not size of the can.
Other reasons they may be putting the small amount in a larger can (since padding isn’t an issue):- that’s the size of cans they have on hand from the factory.
- packing/shipping & stacking/displaying that standard can size might be more cost effective.
- They want dupe customers into thinking they’re getting more for their money.
 - the government is meddling
 - How so? - putting all that wasted space in between the corns because of corn subsidies - You know you’re supposed to eat the cream in creamed corn right? - uh source please

- Because then it won’t be creamed. - Yes, exactly. The goo isn’t wasted space, it’s just as much part of the creamed corn as the whole kernels. - I’m pretty sure that OP is just messing around but it’s actually fun to think about.

- They are not filled with air, they’re typically filled with nitrogen - I was going to say nitrogen but didn’t want to come off as too pedantic.
- 78% of the air is nitrogen. Stop being a dick. - 78% of the air is nitrogen. Stop being a dick. - Great, start a chip company and start filling your bags with air. - You’ll learn quickly that there’s another predominant element in air besides nitrogen (surely it won’t matter though, it’s only 20.8%).
- They mean 100% nitrogen. If they just filled chip bags with regular air they would be more sensitive to pressure changes.
- even more so when you open the bag
- It’s got less oxygen and moisture in it so that bacteria doesn’t have the energy to breed and spoil the contents.

- It’s creamed corn, not corned cream. Creamed is the first ingredient. One could argue that the corn is stealing space from the creamed.
- Government trying to take away our cornographic material
- I am desperately curious about the life that leads up to this question - The first mistake is eating creamed corn
- here i actually wrote about it https://lemmy.world/post/24251140 - It’s glorious - I totally ate the onion (truthion?) on this showerthought lmao

- Chip bags have all that air in them, so the chips don’t get crushed as easily. - if the chips has such a simple explanation then how come everyone talks about that and no one questions why cans of creamed corn have all that wasted space this is what im getting at i think its being surpressed - I have personally never opened a can of creamed corn, so this whole post is new information for me. The chips thing though…that was solved decades ago. Not sure why the confusion persists. - a can doesnt need cushion liquid because cans are hard but cans of creamed corn are mostly liquid and i think its a scam - Why are you straining it? It’s like saying your bottle of fresh orange juice has hardly any pulp after you strain it. - what the fuck are you talking about - You need to get back in the shower to practice thinking.
- Maybe creamed corn is different where you are, but the creamed part is a sauce that goes with the corn. It’s meant to be eaten with the corn and not supposed to be discarded, so I don’t know why you’re straining it.
- Buying creamed corn and straining it to get corn is like buying salsa and straining it to get diced tomatoes - i want the creamed corns but i just dont want all that liquid

- Milk is the real scam. Once I strain it there is basically nothing left. Unless you let it mature like a fine wine. - time makes fools of us all
- Are you Mongolian? Feels like you’re Mongolian…

- Hey are you the real Chad McTruth or some half dicked imposter trying to ruin His great name? - i cant keep track anymore to be honest - Look in you pants is it a full dick or a half dick? - well the libs tried to steal it when i was just a child but they only got away with the tip - My sister and I used to play the just the tip game. - sounds like a slippery slope - Oh it was slippery but it wasn’t a slope.

- You think that’s bad try some cream of mushroom. I swear some cans didnt even have anything in them after straining - You need to open up the can and put it on a shelf in a dark cabinet for a few weeks first. Rookie mistake.

- I didn’t know KenM was on the Fediverse!
- And nobody talks about candy corn bags being 100% wasted space. - Once you discard all the inedible garbage you are left with nothing at all.
- strain?
- Um, dude thats just creamed corn, the cream is part of the product, it isn’t supposed to be 100% corn Just buy canned corn:
- Keep working at it and you’ll get there as a satire artist one of these days
