New York’s governor appointed a special prosecutor Thursday to oversee an investigation into a woman’s allegations that she was gang raped at a Cornell University fraternity house, saying she had lost faith in the local district attorney’s ability to handle the case.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had signed an executive order appointing the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James as the special prosecutor to oversee the investigation, which had initially been closed without charges in 2024.

The woman’s allegations got a rush of new attention when she filed a civil lawsuit last month. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten reopened the investigation Monday, but has been battered by criticism that he’d abandoned the original investigation too quickly.

That’s a relief. It was disgusting how the DA kept pushing it was all consensual without ever interviewing the victim.

He also accused the victim of changing her story when in fact that was not the case and she called it rape from day one:

For his part, the local district attorney in Cornell’s Tompkins county, Matthew Van Houten, declined to pursue charges – claiming, nonsensically, that the woman who came to the police to report a rape did not assert that the encounter was nonconsensual or that she was drugged against her will. Van Houten says that allegations from this month’s civil lawsuit are “dramatically different” from Jane Doe’s statement two years ago. In her interview with police at that time, Doe said: “I can say with 100% confidence I was raped.” When asked about this by CBS News, Van Houten replied: “I’m going to follow up on this because this is news to me.”

The article is opinion, but supplies source links

For myself, I have to say it seems unusual for a DA to publicly release as much investigative product – and opinion – as he seems to be so gleefully doing, unless the point of all this unusual openness is to poison any potential jury or even low-key scuttle any chances of ever going to trial. Glad this case got yanked and given to someone else.

      Agreed!

Also, I think that DA Matthew Van Houten has flushed his own reputation down the toilet and the incident will follow him wherever he goes.

      (What was he thinking? …)
