I’m a tattoo artist and I’ve had a few people drift off lately. As a professional, I actually take it as a compliment because it means they’re relaxed, but I’m curious, do people think we hate it? Ask me anything about the shop ‘green flags’ or ‘red flags’ you’ve been too afraid to ask your artist!
One of the easiest clients I ever worked on would work a 12 hour shift at his job overnight and then come in for a tattoo. He would bring his own pillow and after the stencil went on he would crash and I would just wake home up 4-6 hours later to a fresh tattoo. We barely ever spoke and he never moved on me. It was like a super power.
Wow, you’re an artist too?? Cool 👌👌
Guess I’m too much of a wuss to understand how you can fall asleep being tattooed.
Haha, you’d be surprised! Once the endorphins kick in and the ‘rhythm’ of the machine starts, it can actually be weirdly meditative for some people. Plus, if it’s a long session, the body just kind of gives up and decides a nap is the best way to handle it!
Endorphins are miraculous.
Tell em!
Ever have a bad headache & decide to go to bed? I’ve had headaches that were more painful than getting a tattoo. If you’re getting a large enough tattoo, you’re relaxed, and the setting is comfy enough, I could see falling asleep a bit.
I was annoyed by my last artist because he kept waking me up to ask if I was OK. I assume he was afraid I passed out and was not napping?
I promise he was just worried you’d passed out! It’s funny because being that relaxed is actually the best-case scenario for us, it means your body isn’t fighting the process. Next time, maybe just tell your artist, 'Hey, I’m probably going to doze off, don’t panic if I close my eyes!
Sure, if you’re new, maybe stopping to double check that you did your due diligence and aren’t in a rough spot, maybe once but KEPT😭💀 by the second time I’d be so fucking angry my god
My last ex was (well, is) a tattooist. She thought it was cute when I nodded off, I can’t say I ever thought of it as being a bad thing.
She did find it funny when I passed out one time, though … but only because I’d boasted about having a high pain threshold
I’m one of those that tend to sleep, I also like to speak and would never look at my phone as I find that both disrespectful and a loss of a nice shared moment.
If the artist is zoned in and won’t speak I will just chill and fall asleep, but will happily talk for a few hours if spoken to. I am just a bit sensible to endorphines so I am actually quite drunk while getting a tattoo, and probably not a very good converstation partner.
I love this! The ‘tattoo drunk’ feeling from endorphins is 100% real, and honestly, it’s one of the best ways to handle a long session. I never find it disrespectful when a client zones out or naps, it actually helps me stay ‘zoned in’ on the work. It’s definitely a shared moment, even if it’s a quiet one… i also kinda wanna see your tats lol
Nah, not posting as I like to keep it anon sorry. I am a beardy guy with a lot of cute cartoonish animals and characters. My goal is to have my and my friends kids pass the afternoons colouring in my rabbits and fishies on my arms
A coloring book made out of human skin for the little occultists.
I just received a 9.5 hour session this week. Read, chatted, DJ’ed, and occasionally dozed off. Artist didn’t mind. I’d wager it depends moderately on whatever vibe you’ve already set with the artist, chill vs antagonistic etc.
True, can i see your tat🥹
I dunno, I don’t have much coverage.
But, the stuff I do have, I went into a kind of tr ance after the first few minutes and even drooled at one point during my biggest.
The artists were very nice about it, even if they were bothered. Never had a complaint, instead got compliments on a being a great canvas. So I figure if I ever get more, I’ll just give them a warning and let them decide what to do about it
I’ve never fallen asleep while getting tattooed, but I can see it.
How do you feel about people covering themselves in …what is essentially clipart?
I try not to judge peoples choices but I’m terrible it
Haha, art is definitely subjective! One person’s ‘clipart’ is another person’s meaningful symbol or aesthetic choice. As an artist, I just love that people use their skin to express themselves, whether it’s a tiny simple design or a massive custom piece. To each their own!
Maybe make your own post instead of trying to hijack this one with a inflammatory statement masquerading as a question.
I don’t think they’re trying to hijack the thread, seems like they were responding to this last part of the OP:
Ask me anything about the shop ‘green flags’ or ‘red flags’ you’ve been too afraid to ask your artist!
Thanks, that’s exactly it.
I’ve always been interested in tattoo and piercings but have never gone in for either because I know I make terrible impulsive choices.
Over the years I’ve been really happy at how showed some wisdom because the number of times I’ve changed myself quite significantly through the decades is rather scary
Close, but that’s not it at all… They did leave out an invite
