Seriously every other post, every sub seems like nothing but politics. It’s so boring and disgusting. What made reddit great at one time was the diversity of genres and depth. Lemmy is very shallow and politically motivated it seems. I have been here since the Reddit exodus. It’s always been this way.

Do different Lemmy servers have different content?

Are certain severs curated?

Where do I find the depth and deep subject matter.

You can curate your own feed: use the block button for any communities you don’t want to see.

As for why there’s a lot of politics on lemmy: The west’s leading country just threatened to annihalate an entire civilization yesterday. Kind of a lot going on right now.

I mean it depends on what subs you subscribe to; my subscribed feed is mostly tech, history, and wholesome news.

But politics will tend to bubble up because gestures around

I think this is about when you browse more than anything else. A significant portion of posts on Lemmy are posted by serial posters. If you don’t browse when they post their stuff, you could think it’s all us news bots

Most of us aren’t so privileged that we get to pretend that politics doesn’t control and shape the course of our lives.

I wish I could be as disconnected from the reality of whats happening around us as these people seem to be, genuinely envious.

I would have less anxiety, for a start.

You’re on .ml it’s literally Marxist Leninist. You’re like an American standing in Mexico complaining about everyone speaking Spanish.

It’s literally Mali. Having alternate country codes is just a way to take advantage of countries with less of a presence on the internet to be able to get better domain names and at a lower price. .ml specifically was given away for free.

The worst, I think, is .io since the profits of those domains should go to the chagossians, but it just goes to the British government.

Everything is political, and Lemmy was made as an alternative to Reddit based on ideological reasoning in favor of FOSS and federation. Lemmy was made by communists, and there are a ton of us communists here as a consequence.

Luckily you can choose what you see. If you don’t like politics, just block it or don’t subscribe to it. I just checked and my scaled main page is 17:3 non-politics to politics posts. (One of the 3 is this post here)

Sure, there’s a lot of politics on here but definitely not all of Lemmy is about politics… If you dislike politics, I suggest you block Lemmy communities with politics in them if you dislike to that extent… Or you could just not subscribe to any such communities and stick to “Home” or “Subscribed” which will only give you content from communities you’re subscribed with.

This. Fuck man this world is so spoiled by a long peace that people don’t fucking understand the stakes anymore.

Apparently we are rapidly approaching another period of time where just nicely begging people to take this shit seriously isn’t enough and we are going to have to kill a hundred million people or so for another generation can learn this same fucking lesson we’ve been repeating for some 40,000 years.

But no, Love Island is on, so feel free to ignore the incipient fascism bearing down on you and condemn your children to a world where that won’t be possible.

There is a degree of anount.
I’d say my Reddit subs are similarly set up to my Lemmy communities.
My feed is 80% (US) politics or (F)OSS politics even on stuff that is neither of them in the first place.
Reddit on the other hand was more like 20% potentially political, 75% random stuff like memes or niche sub posts and 5% political/story time subs.

Sadly the reddit feed became almost unusable. The r/sysadmin feed is atrocious.

Why is all of Lemmy politics?

Do you know why the Lemmy platform and the lemmy.ml instance were created in the first place?

Lemmy is very shallow and politically motivated it seems.

Politics is orthogonal to depth. The existence of shallow politics in no way suggests the absence of deep politics.

Because that’s the world we live in. Politics matter more than you want them too. Politics affects our food, health, hobbies, etc…

Reddit is a for profit entity that needs mass engagement to survive. Obviously they are going to want a sanitized, “good vibes” experience

Everything is politics. The moment you think otherwise you become part of the problem.

Something missing from this discussion (that I’ve read) is the size of Lemmy. On a much larger platform you can have 6 different flavours of meme communities or tech communities where there are rules banning political news etc but there’s simply not enough people here to split communities.

It also means that smaller communities, like video game specific communities, have all but died off as the couple of people that started them have lost interest or left Lemmy.

While I get some of the arguments I’ve seen against trying to grow Lemmy these small communities are doomed without a dedicated passionate following and places based around niche topics are never going to survive in such a small space.

With all that said; politics are universal and touch on pretty much every aspect of our lives so political topics come up in every community, even small ones and especially one as politically charged as Lemmy.
