A lot of people tend to misunderstand Marx when he said “religion is the opiate of the masses”.
When wielded by Antichrists, debauched degenerates and sociopaths - as the clergy of old or the new barons- it can be used as a weapon to subvert the people, to bring them to the sin of hatred for your fellow humans - which goes against the teachings of Christ.
But as we find in all religion, there isn’t one that goes against welfare - and especially not Christianity. Jesus was in the streets, feeding the poor, healing the sick and washing the feet of a sex worker.

There is a whole sub-plot in the show “the expanse” where the mormom church is basically a hedge fund and they build their own colony ship to fly off into space. Great show.
