the way I understood it the president could do it but there is a person that carries it and knows the process and how to use the codes and such but if it goes through and passes a variety of verifications then a strike is called.
I would not count me as a good source this is just the impression I got from movies and the occasional article that have actually mentioned the process. There were articles about trumps first term about him repeadadely asking to carry the football and was told no because it stays handcuffed to the carrier who is conversant on the process. Whats kinda scarry is the president is supposed to know some things so the carrier can’t do it themselves and I really wonder if trump has the cognitive ability to do his side of it. Which kinda makes me wonder if vance or anyone has been given whats needed. Honestly im not sure if the vice presidents don’t in general get it as well just in case along with a few others. I mean there is likely only a very small group that knows for sure.

I’m pretty sure there are fail-safes so that multiple top generals have to agree to a nuke. That way some crazy person can’t start Armageddon.
Might take 2 weeks to get new key cards or whatever for new top generals. Or maybe 2 weeks to build a new nuke.
