Not gonna deny that these people exist. But also want to say that I know none of them. Usually they would check trailer and/or go to something that they think will be a good watch. Never heard a single person say “Trailer is shit and gives out whole plot. Movie will suck!” and still give it a try at the cinema.
I go to the theater every Sunday morning to the earliest showings of that day.
The theater chain in my town has a monthly subscription. $20/month and I can see 4 movies a week.
I don’t always love the theater itself, but the experience of seeing movies in theaters is very different than watching at home and I love that feeling.
I’m actively choosing to go to a new location in a dark room without distractions, to turn off my phone, to not speak, and to give the movie my full and complete attention. There’s something to that, which is hard for me to explain, but it changes my relationship to the movie.
Sometimes people are shitty, talking or texting, but I find that it doesn’t actually happen much. Perhaps I has something to do seeing early movies, rather than prime time. I don’t know.
Unless something happens to drastically alter my ability to enjoy the experience, I don’t foresee that I will ever stop going.
That’s good. I think you’re misunderstanding my post. The point is about people who whine about new movies, saying “nobody wants this” but then go out of their way to see it. It would be one thing if they were watching it at home and putting less effort in, but they will go to the theatre and put all that effort and money in for a movie they claim shouldn’t be made because nobody wants it
People do the same, and spend a lot more, to watch sporting events that turn out to be crappy.
We have one little theater in town, 6 or 8 screens? Got to see Blade Runner 2049 with my ex-wife, just us. Saw IT by myself and only 3 other people in the house.
I’d kill for a cinema where you can order real food and drink beer on the cheap. There’s one in the “big” town, too lazy to go that far.
Most of the time, you don’t know you didn’t want to see a movie until after you saw it and found out it fucking sucks.
Yes but I’m talking about people who were complaining at the first trailer “nobody wants this” and still go to the effort of seeing it. Typically happens with remakes and sequels and superhero films.
I think there are some people that don’t like things and they don’t want anyone to like things either.
Yeah there are a lot of a super hero slop movies built on an assembly line, but to someone out there, a favorite character or story they liked as a kid is real for 2 hours. Maybe they got teased for loving Shazam, and now they are grown and can just leave their problems behind and watch a dumb Shazam movie. I wish more people would just let other people like things and leave them alone.
I always think every movie that gets made is sort of a miracle. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people work on a piece of art and they have to compromise or it doesn’t happen. That’s so rare in our world.
If only there was a place people could discuss the goodness of a movie and look at how other people found their experience, before buying a ticket oneself.
If only everyone shared exactly the same opinions on everything cuz you still run into the same problem when people say it’s good, but then you don’t agree after seeing it yourself.
I’ve always thought that if you share an opinion on a movie, you should also share your reasons for having it.

Some of my favorite movies are “bad” movies. I’ve got a friend who feels the same way and we SMS each other single line movie titles and just know the other will understand.
A recent SMS was “poultrygeist night of the chicken dead” … It was fantastic
A well written review will detail why they thought it was good, so the reader can think about if those reasons would make it enjoyable for them.
Unfortunately, most people are semi literate and writing at that level is a challenge

We like it, now that you can buy seats and the theaters are smaller and steeper (no bad seats). Too expensive to do all the time but great for the Spectacular Movies with all the effects. Too loud usually, the sound is great and clear but too loud.
I don’t know anybody who says they are going to see something nobody wants to see, maybe those movies don’t make it down here.
A lot of the big popular movies, like superhero movies, immediately get people whining “nobody wants this”
I don’t hear that but do know plenty of people who think it’s sclock and ought not be made. I’m easy to entertain I guess - if something is beautifully filmed and there is action, explosions, space battles or monsters, that is the stuff I like to see at the theater.
Dramas, other stories, and horror, also musicals I prefer on a smaller screen at home.
My mom told me once “you have the same taste in movies as a teenage boy” and I guess she was right, but she didn’t like science fiction or comics, only serious real world stories. I live in this world. When I go to the movies I want to see another world.
I’m with you there. Sometimes, I’m easy to please. I wanna see dinosaurs and other visual spectacles on the big screen. My favourite movies are ones with a good story but good visuals are sufficient sometimes, especially for the big screen.
I never used to like going to the cinema but then all I used to go and see were ‘blockbusters’
Then I got a job working in an art deco cinema that showed art house type films and that made me enjoy the whole experience more
Being able to have a pint whilst watching and the free tickets certainly helped
I went to the midnight release of Avengers Endgame and one guy showed up in full Iron Man Cosplay. Seeing him walk out of that theater at the end of the movie was the highlight of my entire year.
I took my ex’s son. He went in wearing an Ant-Man helmet while holding a Capt America shield in hand and the Infinity Gauntlet on the other.

It’s me. I watch a lot of movies and see arthouse stuff the public doesn’t care about and if something is a big enough train wreck occasionally I’ll see what’s going on (shout out to CATS). Though I have Regal Unlimited so I don’t “pay” for a ticket
Having a theater subscription has definitely made going to movies far more enjoyable tbh and one of the only subscription type services I have anymore. It’s way easier for me to just pick a random afternoon, drag a friend along and take more chances on a movie when, as you said, I’m not “paying” for that ticket.
Exactly. Especially considering it’s rare that there’s a month where there are fewer than 2 movies I actively want to see in theaters. So I’m already saving money with it, all those other movies are just bonuses
Plus you get surprised. I thought Clown in a Cornfield was going to suck and I would have never seen Life of Chuck normally but I ended up really enjoying both of them

I just saw Hamnet and there was only 4 people in the theater. I enjoyed the movie.
I saw that one too. I found it okay.
I loved going to watch movies at the cinema. Then they decided to raise tickets prices absurdly. And set popcorn and drinks prices even higher and, against the law, decided to ban consumption of outside food (you have to argue every time with them). So right now, a full price ticket with popcorns and a small drink goes for more than a decent diner at a restaurant.
Yeah, that’s me. Over the last 10 years, I’ve watched 51 movies in theaters. Only a few of them were movies I actually wanted to see.

I don’t understand going to the movie theater at all. Except for the sound, every other aspect of the experience is worse than my own living room.
For me, it’s a social activity where I can enjoy with close friends. I also don’t have a 4K TV or surround sound system, so the audio and visual quality is miles ahead in the theatre than my 1080p TN LCD flatscreen and Bluetooth speaker.
Original Sony Bravia Z Series. Don’t even use the Bluetooth speaker. Yeah. Theaters definitely hit different than at home.
And it definitely is a fun experience to see movies on the big screen.
I got a modern 42 inch TV hooked up to an RCA stereo from the 90s with two big box speakers and I get that theatre sound right in my bedroom. A set like this is still only like $50-60 if you ca find 'em.
You don’t need a 5 or 7 speaker system for perfect surround sound; just 2. Headphones might even sound better if you’re on a tight budget.
Apartment living sucks. The walls here are cellophane thin. Headphones is the best I got.
What got me back into theatres was going out and being around people without actually, you know, being around people “post”-COVID. That and I wanted to support my local indie theatre, 'cause it’s cool and stood a huge risk of going out of business during the pandemic.
I don’t go anymore, but really as someone who wants to get out of the house more, I can 100% see it being as a good enough reason to get out of the house.
