Thank the Ukrainians for blowing the shit out of the fucking Muscovite run Data Centers.
Nah, it’s because all the Albertans who would have voted for this are paying more attention to US politics than their own. It didn’t get enough coverage on FOX News.
If it helps most of them are kids that haven’t reached voting age. Don’t forget, a lot of the kids here that are the loudest, could very well be some of the youngest.
They will try again in a bunch a months.
That’s how the right wing nutjobs do it in Europe. Just keep proposing referendums until one passes and then if you don’t like the outcome just hold another and another until you get your way.
And then when they do finally get their way they’ll be all “Sorry, the [slim majority of] people [who bothered to turn up] have given us a clear mandate. This can never be undone.”
Cries in British
If they succeed, they should change the name to “North America” just to mess with trumps obsession with the word.
nah, central america. because they’re the center of poutine science
then statesia has to be south america
USA sponsored dissent failed this time but the agitators and the money are still there.
76% to stay 24% to leave, this is the type of gap that would take decades and billions to flip. Even then there would be no guarantee
*Russia
Or to put it another way, the orange chancre wants Canada to submit to his authority, but he’s not paying for the propaganda, nor will he. He’s too cheap and doesn’t care that much about Canada. He cares SOLELY about himself, his image, and how to enrich his family: that is all.
The one who cares most about destroying Western cohesion and the rule of law – and uses widespread, even global manipulation of social media to divide communities and countries to do it – is now, and has always been, Vladimir Putin.
Yea, this is not the end, this is the beginning.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last couple decades, it’s that about 1/4 of people are thoughtless fools, easily caught up in whatever bullshit is shoved in their face the loudest.
that about 1/4 of people are thoughtless fools, easily caught up in whatever bullshit is shoved in their face
The US confederacy has spent decades ensuring their entire political process heavily favors that very very dumb 1/4 of the people.
It’s closer to a third. In the last ten years trumps idiots have had like a +- 33 percent locked in like a bunch of child molesting Mot worshipers.
It’s not a coincidence that that percentage matches unusually well with the number of Americans who can’t read past a sixth grade level…
South Park called it
They can still be used as a casus belli
We should probably deport the traitors to US then
Sorry, no vacancy. We are full on traitors at the moment.
Genuinely I believe we should treat them like the USSR treated the Kulaks and relocate them to a desolate area of the the northwest territories
That’s an example of immediate casus belli.
Quiet imprisonment of their leaders for non-political reasons (I am sure the CRA can find dirt on them) works much better. Even better if they get in unfortunate accidents.
If you’re on socials, bullshit is being shoved in your face. Is your palate so refined that you avoid it entirely? Or, like violence, is the seed of foolishness in all of us?
yes
Is your palate so refined that you avoid it entirely?
Anything with an algorithm, yeah. Lemmy is all that I am on.
And it’s not so much “refinement of palate” as it is simply making room in my head for my own thoughts, and ensuring nothing gets into my head without me having had the opportunity to think about it and fact check if need be.
And yeah, I do a LOT of fact checking. Staying off social media keeps it at a manageable level for me.
There’s a ton of bias here too, gotta be careful with that.
Sure, so is humanity itself. Show me anyone that is free of bias, and I’ll show you a magical unicorn.
But things move slowly enough here that I can listen, take my time, consider carefully, and fact check. There’s also not nearly as much of a bot problem here: chances are excellent I am speaking with a human being as flawed as I am.
The point is not to isolate oneself from differing viewpoints, even biased ones; the point is to isolate oneself from propaganda: the presentation of faux “information” that is either truth-lite or truth free, and always served with a dose of something viscerally triggering.
Totally agree. However, I think we can all agree this is a very left leaning site, and because of that I generally see pro-left things, and anti-right things.
Feels like every shitty thing a right wing nut does gets posted here, but does every shitty thing a left leaning politician get seen here? Probably not.
There’s no magical cure, as you said, it’s human nature. I just wanted to point out to you (and other readers mostly) that it’s very easy to overlook these biases, and end up turning those biases into one’s own reality.
So basically what I’m hearing you say is that I should ensure that my own bias of choice should be equitably represented in whatever I choose to consume so as to not miss anything, is that right?
For myself, I have come to the conclusion that the split-second a discussion of bias turns toward more-preferred vs. less-preferred, such as when you ask, “Feels like every shitty thing a right wing nut does gets posted here, but does every shitty thing a left leaning politician get seen here?” we are no longer discussing truth, or even a good-faith search for truth.
And that’s not what bias is. Again, I am not interested in insulating myself from anything merely biased. Why would I be?
However, I am deeply invested in avoiding propaganda.
Thus, it does not matter to me one bit what anyone else posts. There is no such thing as “enough of this” or “not enough of that” because if I want to see something I just go find it.
Frankly, if you personally don’t like what is posted, if it’s too-left or not-enough-right for your own taste as you suggest, then you should step up to meet your own needs by posting whatever it is you want to see, or finding a community that does.
But you haven’t addressed the elephant in the room – you know, the one in bold, propaganda – at all, and you seem to be far more concerned with ensuring that other people are not turned away from propaganda, trying to slide in “bias” as a weasel word that excludes what you’re really getting at.
The problem here is that you’re talking to someone who literally doesn’t care. For reasons I won’t go into here, I have been examining my own biases deeply for LITERAL decades: I don’t hide from them. I know what I believe, and I know exactly what has gone into my belief of it, and I have been having deep interactions with the mechanics of belief for the entirety of my adult life.
So I’ll clue you in: Your entire existence is your own perception, as is my own, as is common to humanity. Of course bias becomes reality, because it is your belief, and your belief both shapes and fills your own perception of life. Bias is simply the amount by which a fact is skewed to purpose, whether benign or malign. I hate to break it to you, but we are ALL, each of us, an incredibly messy basket of biases and half-truths along with whatever grasp of tangible reality we each pretend to lay claim to. There is no cure. It is the nature of humanity, something propagandists dishonestly manipulate to the gain of those billionaires and oligarchs who can pay for that kind of unsubtle steering of the masses.
You want to ensure your bias doesn’t become your reality? That’s simple. Get to know yourself and your beliefs in more than a superficial way, and you won’t have to be frightened of anything that anyone says. You can relieve yourself of the responsibility for the biases of others and gladly know your own truth. In that light, lies don’t stand for long.
So me, I don’t care what you consume. I literally have ZERO fear of missing out, lol. Read what you want. I know I do.
Stay off the algorithms, folks.

Alberta: We may be racist hillbillies, but we’re CANADIAN racist hillbillies.
Alberta: We may be racist hillbillies, but we’re still nowhere near as gullible as magats
One recalls a certain Canadian “Freedom” truck convoy a few years back.
Don’t fool yourself. You’ve got plenty of magats.
hey us hillbillians may be racist, but we’re not that racist.
like legitimately i grew up in a right wing cult and my hillbilly grandmother taught us kids that all the hate the cult was spewing was bad. “Save your hate for George W Bush” she’d say.
Does Alberta have hills?
The Alberta/BC border runs about midway through the Rocky Mountain range, both Banff and Jasper parks are in Alberta.
Yes, Foothills.
It wasn’t even close
Yeah 75% is a fucking hell no
American here: 25% is a staggering number of people who see what is happening to us and say “I want a piece of that.”
That number is “be afraid” territory. This dude only has like 30% approval in his own country.
It still means 1 in 4 people you see on the street is dangerously misinformed. Or, just as bad, simply does not know what it would actually mean, but still decided to vote on the topic.
Keep in mind this was a non binding vote to have a binding vote on the issue later on. According to the polls the number of people who said they’d vote yes to hold the binding but would vote no in the actual vote if it was held was quite large. Then there’s the fact that we can be certain almost all the seperatists voted since this realistically is the only chance to get what they want and consider that only a third of eligible voters voted. Them only getting 25% under those conditions means their actual support is vanishingly small.
Yeah, I can see the logic of voting yes in “maybe if we have an actual vote the separatists will actually shut up”
This is why it’s up to everyone to vote. If you refrain from voting, thinking that your outcome is guaranteed, you’re essentially letting an opposing vote count for two.
1 in 4 that voted. About a 3rd of Albertans gave a shit one way or another to actually go vote.
A lot more than a third of eligible voters came out to vote. Not all the polls have even been unofficially counted yet and we’re at nearly 1.9 million of the 2.9 million eligible voters.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/alberta-referendum-live-results-9.7385074
https://www.elections.ab.ca/resources/statistics-research/elector-counts/Also, this is a vote to have a vote to leave, so what we’re seeing with is the ceiling, you’d expect more for a stay vote if it actually came to that.
They are not misinformed, stop saying that, my aunt said Canada deserves to be invaided by America for its globalist persuits, plenty of spiteful dumb fucks think like this, they are Not misinformed.
1 in 4 women are sexually abused as a child, usually by a close family member. Coincidence? I dont think so
You might actually be on to something…
I don’t see how it could be. There’s no way Alberta could be self sufficient in the global economy.
You can’t reason a person out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into
Beautiful. Why haven’t I heard this one before? Standard repertoire from now on!
Why haven’t I heard this one before?
Because you’re one of today’s lucky 10,000!
Thank you for thinking of posting this, it’s as apt as the original post.
Enjoy
Yeah, but there aren’t enough idiots anywhere to actually do something like that.
Press x to doubt.
If there were, Quebec would have done it years ago.
Or, to go to a different country, Texas would have ceded from the US.
TX thinks they’re special enough to have their own private power grig largely disconnected from the rest of the USA managed by the folks at https://www.ercot.com/
Guess which state it is we see massive outages across whenever there’s a slight dip in the winter temps or the least bit of snow?
I was about to ask “and what good has that done them?” before I got to your second paragraph.
Thankfully not
They tell themselves they support all of Canada, just like Quebec does.
Quebec hasn’t successfully left Canada either
only because France said they didnt want them
1 in 4 are representing US interests in Canada. That’s way too high.
Sadly, looks like most of the other 9 ballot questions in this referendum, passed
It’s not like they were neutrally phrased.
“Do you want Alberta to be able to lower immigration back down to sustainable levels”
Like, come on.
I mean, they raised immigration up to non-sustainable levels in the first place, so why shouldn’t they be able to lower their immigration back again? Other than rank incompetence, of course.
Ottawa has absolutely strangled immigration already.
All of the questions rested on faulty premises to begin with.
The UCP has simply abandoned even attempting to govern. Their whole thing is just blame Ottawa. They’re just testing the waters about how cool people would be with also blaming immigrants.
When you are incapable of governing: just blame. Oldest trick in the book. If you think back to all your worst bosses you’ve had in your life, I’m sure you’ll recognize the pattern.
Hmm. The question then is what Ottawa can actually do about the UCP’s rank incompetence.
I’m just glad I’m not in the UCP’s splash zone. On the other hand, I’d almost rather swap them for the government currently mismanaging my own country; on the gripping hand, if I’m really lucky my government will actually be voted out next month…
I feel like it’s possible the separation question was a distraction so people weren’t talking about the other questions.
I do l’t think the other 9 questions needed a referendum either. The government isn’t restricted from pursuing any of the things it listed. It was just window dressing for the separation question.
Now peeps some of the more reflective of the bunch can think about why they were so convinced they were going to win the vote. What and who manipulated them? There was never the support, it wasn’t a media conspiracy, or the CBC working for Trudeau.
Voter fraud will be the conclusion by the most brainwashed of the cult members.
Daylight time didn’t pass.
Removing equalization payments passed -I guess they already forgot 2020 oil prices.
Anti-immigration passed, Alberta ICE , ICE, baby -across three questions.
Senate abolition passed -I’m cool with that. Elect a Senate or GTFO.
I strongly doubt most voters understood the big words in those questions.
Look I am old and have a farm and I don’t know much about anything except for cows, pigs, barley, and that immigrants are to blame for my failing crops.
No green men from USA to press on the scale?
The Americans at least appear to be very incompetent at subverting their allies elections. Seems to amount to a ket addled Elon Musk on video stream ranting about replacement theory.
I don’t know why anyone takes the civil war / secession-obsessed people seriously.
It’s a small, loud minority that thinks it’s a majority because they mainline algorithmically-content all day, every day. That holds true in Canada and here in the US.
They’re a bunch of fucking clowns.
I mean, just look at Brexit.
You take these things seriously because they can have adverse consequences, and that minority may not be as much of a minority as you might think.
If you’re in a room and a quarter of the people in that room want to burn the room down, do you not take them seriously because it’s only a quarter of the room?
because a small bunch of clowns can sway public opinion their way in the right circumstances.
the algorithm is most folks reality now, they don’t live outside of it.
a civil war is a militarized conflict. It requires people grabbing guns or explosives or other arms and being willing to kill someone else for being on the wrong side. If no one in canada was arming up and murdering people for being on a different side then of course not.
Shocker /s. it’s almost like all polling outside of the provincial number had voters at a consistent 75% to outright disagree with leaving.
Good for them. Stay united Canada and join forces with the EU
