In 2006, Fabián Escalante, former chief of Cuba’s intelligence, stated that there had been 634 assassination schemes or attempts.
They eventually got him at age 92 with the oldest CIA trick in the book - waiting until he dies of natural causes.
Also, I find it harder to believe the CIA failed to assassinate him than that it was a publicity stunt.
