Most new laptops do, aren’t they? I see new laptops having thunderbolt type C or USB4 for a charging/dock port. Havent seen a single proprietary in a while.
As for PCs, USB4 supports only 240W at max and therefore can not feed a modern decent GPU like 5070ti alone. Finding 240W PD charger is also a major task.
My laptop has the barrel charger and 100w type c, but the type c isn’t enough power to run the gpu

The standard is capable of 240w
Money, it’s hard to beat a barrel jack when it comes to economies of scale
And durability.
I have a not-that-old work laptop with a single usb-c charge port (for the dock) and the connection sucks. Thankfully that one also has a barrel jack for power.
I hate that my new one is usb-c only. I’m moving between locations often enough that long-term durability is a concern having to plug/unplug that one all the time. I’d much rather it was an extra few mm thicker and have a charge port I’ll never have to worry about.
Meanwhile the last failed barrel jack I had to fix was 10$ and a dozen or so screws to take the back off and remove the old failed jack
The less footprint could be nice, but since I’m having to haul around a charging block thicker than the laptop anyway it’s a moot point
im going to bet they just havent shifted their supply chains over yet. . i mean, i think it is happening but this shit takes a long time to fall out. it takes years to setup all the materials needed to create this stuff. it takes years to make substantial changes to them while they use up old stock, design new shit and then have to modify assemply a resource changes to get that stuff. and thats years before it hits your shelf.
i think there also might be a ceiling to usbc… my thinkpad lappy has a 230w power supply. can usb-c do that?
at some point (we may already be there) usbc components will be so ubiquitous where it matters in manufacturing regions that youll see literally everything under a certain voltage using it

The latest USB-C Power Delivery Standard should do 240w, but not all USB-C ports are rated for it.
There’s almost no support for PD that high yet across devices. It will definitely take some time to roll out. The only laptop I know that supports it is the Framework 16, and it requires an extra purchase of a $150 charger.
Nor are a lot of cables. 100W is far more likely, at least for a while, since that was a standard for a fair while as it is.

I have to admit I’m pretty ignorant in low-end laptops.
Business class laptops tend to be able to charge at 100W over USB-C, but often have a dedicated charging port as well (Magsafe for Apple, rectangular charge port for Lenovo, for example).
For any laptop that draws 100W or less, I believe they’re required to charge over USB-C in the EU. Barrel jack is cheaper though, so they can shave a couple of dollars off the price by using it, which could lead to significant profits in increased sales, since most of the competition is using the same basic parts.
