The voter ID requirements are designed to be impossible for a lot of Citizens to meet, in particular it is very common for married women to have a different name on their birth certificate from their current name.
The color photo requiement also means you can’t prove citizenship using a recently-issued passport
I heard a story on NPR just today where a woman had to fight like hell to get her birth certificate because her parents never got one because they thought it was wrong to register your child with the state.
That’s the least of it. The biggest group this affects is married women who changed their name. Since it no longer matches the birth certificate, they can’t use that. Since the passport has a black and white photo, they can’t use that either.
In the best case, they have to find three different documents, which they may not be able to easily obtain, and which require spending time and money for, in order to vote. Many won’t.
