Did anybody else here make the grave mistake of doing this in Oblivion, the game notorious for enemy auto-leveling?
I went off doing random shit the moment that Captain Picard let me out of that sewer, and by the time I showed up to be the Hero of Kvatch I was this crazy invisible assassin of doom, and probably at the top of the thieves guild or the dark brotherhood or both.
So then if memory serves, the town is under attack from monsters and is on fire. The game drops me into a small walled-in arena and instead of whatever lv 1 imps and cockroaches are normally there, I’m holding my bow and arrow and looking up the fiery eyes of half a dozen 12-foot-tall giga-chad linebacker demons from hell. Oh and look they are already sprinting in my direc-- DEAD!
I probably took some creative liberties there but you get the idea.
I think I had to lower the difficulty slider to get through that room. Then I put it back to normal assuming the worst was over, only to have the game put me through a CORRIDOR of hyper-strong enemies next! So twice I had to lower the difficulty.
On one hand, this happened because my character was a min-maxed glass cannon, and a stereotypical one at that (stealth archer, how original! /s). But that same character had no problem with the entire game before or after that town because the whole point of the game is to have the freedom to approach encounters as you wish.
So in many ways that situation was less about auto-leveling, and more about the meme-worthy situations where a boss late in the game requires completely new mechanics the player has never seen. Or even better, it was the anti-forced-stealth-mission!

Are there any games that level bosses based on your level? So it wouldn’t matter if you’re level 1 or 99, the first boss would always be X+1 levels above you, and something like a later boss would be X+20 levels above you. So even if you grind to hell it just makes them a challenge no matter what.
I hate it when they do this bs to regular enemies. I might be a god walking amongts men but still have to struggle to kill a single malnourished bandit? Bs
Yeah if anything it should only really be with bosses.

I think there are a few schools of thought towards this type of thing. Me personally, I would want a challenge despite my due diligence and I’m often the person disappointed when I nuke a boss.
However, you will have people that intentionally do the extra stuff so that they are op. Those individuals would hate that if they spent a lot of time doing this and the boss isn’t a breeze they would feel as if their time was wasted doing that content.
A game that comes to mind that recieved a lot of flak for that kind of scaling was last epoch. Every boss gets a shield as you lower their health and it makes having powerful gear, especially in lower areas, feel like less of a boon.
Personally, I think the answer is to move away from pure stats being the indicator of difficulty. Just bumping up health based on level would make a boss feel insane if you dumped most of your levels into less combat oriented stats in the games that have them. So you would feel weak despite being “high level”. The answer to it is having mechanics of a fight be challenging despite your level. If you mess up or ignore a mechanic, you are punished. However, if you’re strong enough you can afford to make those mistakes more often while the fight isn’t just a push over.
This, of course, requires way more effort and actual game design with fun combat so that the game doesnt make bosses feel like a chore or just gimmicks. The easy answer is to just buff stats, which is why most games just make enemies a sponge in high difficulty.
Final Fantasy 8 did this, if I remember correctly.
They did, but it incentivized you to not level up at all. Higher level magic was more significant at lower levels, especially if you junction it to your attributes so if you kept your level low, you’d have insanely high numbers for your level. Thousands of HP at level 10 or so? You’re unkillable.
