Donald Trump on Monday, January 19 threatened 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne over France’s intentions to decline the US leader’s invitation to join his “board of peace.” The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of war-torn Gaza, but the charter does not appear to limit its role to the occupied Palestinian territory.
“I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron. A source close to Macron told AFP on Monday that France “does not intend to answer favorably” to the invitation.
The board’s charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza,” the source close to the French president said.
I believe the term for this is extortion.
Pay me 1 billion in protection money or I ruin your export business.

Just more reason for California and entire West Coast in general to secede.
I’ve already been not buying American wine, but I’ll double my French wine intake for the team.
If France chooses to reward me with recipes to pair with their wines I will happily oblige.
90% of all American wine is grown in California. Napa and Sonoma, the heart of the industry, overwhelmingly voted against Trump in 2024 by like a 2/3 majority.
They will gladly funnel their additional wine money into campaigns against Trump.
I don’t think the average American will care about champagne tariffs.
I’ve never heard of American sparkling wine.
