There are functions that I’m sure ICE/DHS did or do that are probably necessary for the country. But ICE/DHS are fundamentally corrupted. They need to be eliminated, and we need new departments that are accountable, and chartered in a way that they can’t grow into the corrupt beasts that ICE/DHS are.

Everything ICE/DHS did/does (officially, not murder), was done before ICE existed. It was created for the purpose it’s fulfilling now. INS and USCS already existed.

The point of the creation of DHS (and by extension ICE) was to give the Bush admin a way to utilize the over-reaching powers they granted themselves after the World Trade Center. Because they believed in a Unitarian executive, they wanted all power under the Presidents direct control, and out of agencies that may not go along with their agenda.

Well, the beast ate it’s own fucking tail didn’t it.

I keep seeing this idea float around that there is some perfect organizational method to government that will prevent corruption. I don’t think that’s possible. All forms of government rely on the people involved acting in good faith. At the end of the day there are only two things that keep any governmental system functioning as intended:

      1. the internal moral judgment of government officials (for those that have morals)
      2. fear of consequences (for those that have no morals)

Clearly the US is currently dealing with those who have no morals, which means the primary problem is that they do not fear consequences. It is incumbent on the citizens to ensure #2 is in place, in the absence of #1. The US is failing miserably in that respect.
