The former House speaker thinks the GOP could see a wider exodus as MAGA rift grows

Kevin McCarthy is something of an expert in how quickly the mood of Republican legislators can turn.

The Republican representative from California and former House speaker said on Tuesday that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s upcoming retirement should shock GOP leaders into action. Speaking to Fox News‘ Jesse Watters, McCarthy called the Georgia congresswoman’s announcement a “canary in the coal mine” and warned that further Republican defections were imminent if party leaders didn’t work to promote unity.

“She’s almost like the canary in the coal mine,” McCarthy said. “This is something inside Congress, they’d better wake up, because they are going to get a lot of people retiring, and they’ve got to focus.”

Even before the surprise announcement from one of the party’s most-visible politicians, Republicans were staring down some terrifying math. While the party currently controls the lower chamber, 22 Republican representatives have already shared they won’t contest their seats in 2026. Polling data at the moment points toward a brutal midterm election for Republicans as voters react to the broadly unpopular actions of Donald Trump in his second term.

Anytime you read the news and it sounds like a huge win for the party not in power, it is manipulation. I have not seen a single shred of evidence to suggest that anything is beginning to reverse course. We are still falling headlong into the Handmaid’s Tale.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Tell the masses we are losing so they get complacent and let us fuck them over even more.

They’ll get replaced with even dumber, more loyal dickheads that can be bought for much less. Is it good that we might lose more shit birds? Yes. Is it potentially even worse for future us? Also yes. We’re in a lose, lose, lose situation.

Counter idea, its to actually keep Republicans from resigning.

Current make up of house is 219-213. With 3 open seats. Lets guess dems take 2 of those, which they had before vacated. So now its 220-215.

With Greene retiring it goes 219-215 meaning you can lose 2 votes on any legislation. Tie votes mean question is lost.

If a slate of reps may retire at 4 retirees you see a power sharing agreement, and 5 hands the gavel to the dems. No one wants to be the last one out to give over the gavel. And if you read reports that a bunch of people might retire you might put yours on hold so it doesnt mess anything up.

Effectively this is telling republicans, we know you think getting out is good but a lot of you are talking about it and if you do we lose the house.

It gets even uglier if dems take all 3 open seats.

Another possibility is that some Republican politicians think Trump isn’t the only one facing the possibility of getting in trouble over the Epstein files. Maybe Republicans know “fake news” isn’t going to cut it this time. Maybe they think their chances of being called to answer questions under Congressional oath will be better if they are not in Congress when the news drops. Just saying.

If only we could be so lucky. Even if a mass exodus happens (doubtful), I’m sure the people they find to replace those that leave will be a new goose step up in craziness.
