Footage showing the moment Hala Khreis was killed as she tried to leave Gaza City went viral earlier this month. It’s one of a growing number of videos that show unarmed civilians holding white flags being shot dead.

There was a quote that I’m remembering coming from Nixon about Vietnam that observed that when he lost Cronkite, he lost the war. I’m seeing a shift in the mainstream American press that’s increasingly highlighting what in all honesty are war crimes using the kinds of bleak language normally reserved for things like civil wars in Africa.

I can only see Israel, particularly while still under the Netanyahu government, becoming more and more isolated from the rest of the world.

People really seem to forget that prior to October 7th, Bibi was facing regular mass protests. Accusations of full authoritarianism. He was being condemned for the fact that he was building the most ultra-conservative government Israel had ever seen. Facing multiple political corruption and bribery accusations and MAYBE even looking at future jail time, at least if he didn’t maintain the PM seat and the relative immunity it offers.

The Bibi administration NEEDS Hamas. Without them, they’re just screwed. Only the threat of violent attack from across the border is able to maintain his power. And indeed, he’d even been facing accusations that he was directly sending support to Hamas.

Really, nothing good will happen on the region until the Israeli people follow through on their political duty and vote all these fuckers out, then immediately become partners with Gaza and the West Bank to build Palestine into a functional, modern democracy where its citizens have a chance to thrive. THAT is their recipe for long-term peace and stability. No amount of smart bombs, iron domes, blockades, and border walls will get them there, at least shy of completing the genocide so many in the Bibi administration have said publicly they want.

I sure hope you are right, that this is finally the tide turning… but I’ve seen that tide fail to turn before.

I mean, Isreal is the reason hamas is even a thing. They funded them for a long time, and it wouldn’t suprise me in the least if we found out they still were. It’s clear the Isreal government doesn’t give a shit about civilian lives no matter what nation they are from.

there is another very recent clip from ITV news UK showing a guy being killed while their group of 5 holding a white flag to fetch relatives that were left behind. It was posted on Lemmy but I forgot where.

EDIT: I found the link here. It’s sadder that the ITV reporter even Interviewed the victim before he was murdered. It starts at around 2:00. But it’s worth to view the whole thing.

Since they are treating them as others (foreigners/strangers), Israel is messing up, even from a religious view:

Leviticus 19 (KJV) 33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. 34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Or if you prefer NIV 33 "'When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Their family had spent weeks agonizing over whether to flee as Israeli troops moved into Gaza City’s al-Rimal neighborhood, tanks rolling past their front door and a terrifying cacophony of bombs, quadcopter drones and gunfire thundering all around them.

The IDF has repeatedly claimed that it is doing everything in its power to avoid harming civilians, but its soldiers shot hostages waving a white flag, violating its rules of engagement and raising questions about those efforts.

You made us feel like it’s safe to leave, we had white flags in our hands as instructed,” Sara told CNN in an interview from Istanbul, where she has joined her Turkish fiancée after fleeing through Rafah Crossing.

The IDF has not commented on the family’s claim, but satellite imagery and photos from the same period reviewed by CNN show that Israeli troops were stationed in the area, including at a school just 200 meters (about 650 feet) down the road, to the west of where Hala was killed.

The Khreis family say they were told that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had organized an evacuation route on a road running south, but as they fled, the message changed to go east.

Nour, another of Hala’s daughters, who is in Rafah, said that she had begged her mother for weeks to flee, but she refused, worried about how she and the rest of the family might survive the journey south amid reports that evacuation areas were being hit.
