Armed suspect Patrick Havas allegedly attacked Amy Acton during a campaign stop at a fair, injuring several people
Amy Acton, Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, was the target of an attack on Sunday during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair, campaign officials said. Several people were injured when the armed assailant lunged at Acton.
The suspect knocked volunteers to the ground before he was arrested and was “discovered to have weapons”, Mahoning county Democratic party chairperson Chris Anderson said in a statement.
Sheriff Jerry Greene told a local NBC outlet, 21 News, that the suspect, Patrick Havas, knocked down two older adults during the incident.
Havas is expected to be charged with assault and disorderly conduct, Greene told 21 News.
they have “assaulted” right there. In multiple places! But going with “lunged” i guess.
Since “assault” is a specific crime and the guy hasn’t been convicted, they might use “lunged” to avoid being accused of libel.
I doubt it. ‘Assault’ is a specific crime and an accurate description. Football offense “assaults” the defense, does it not? That’s an example of the word as a description that is perfectly valid. They could have used it - and did in a way, as it’s already in the word “assailant” which they did use.
Headlines are 90% of the information people take away, and the excuse always given for bland, fascist-supporting wording is ‘well, they could be sued’.
There is a grain of truth in that, but applied to all print outlets over 50 years - no. It’s much, much more that they’re manipulating political reaction.
In this case “lunged” instead of “assaulted” because MAGAs must be coddled. I honestly don’t understand who The Guardian thinks they are. They’re as progressive as NPR which is to say somewhere between “sort of” and “actively supporting the right-wing narrative”.
It’s going to get worse. And law enforcement won’t always be on the side of law.
