Contributing factors may have been widespread lead poisoning and a changing climate.

Side note: apparently the most common cause of an empire collapsing is an overproduction of elites who fight for money and power, and are willing to sell out their empire to foreign interests to get ahead of their peers.
It would really suck to live in a world like that.
