    For those of us not versed in the Divided States… whatever it is, what does the state of the union usually do/entail?

      It’s a speech that the President gives to a joint session of Congress, so Senators and Representatives are all in the chamber together.

      The Constitution mandates that the President gives Congress an update on the State of the Union “from time to time”, and over the years that has evolved into a speech given around this time of year, every year except the first year of a President’s term. It is also viewed as an opportunity for the President to advocate for legislation he favors.
