Han Duck-soo was convicted of playing a key role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s imposition of martial law, which a court said was an insurrection.
Mr Yoon, the previous president, got 5 years for his role in the insurrection. Mr Han, the second in command, gets 23 years. Ain’t that some shit?
They’re also going for the death penalty for Yoon though?
Yes, but going for and receiving are entirely different things. As far as I’m aware, the only thing he is currently receiving is the 5 years (but not everything is settled yet). Seeing as how they gave the second in command over 20 years, I’m hopeful that they will actually dish out some real consequences. We’ll see.
I was also surprised about it when reading the headline about 5 years.
That’s just one charge, there are others that are being prosecuted (with lengthier sentences).
I really hope he gets more, but as an american, I was just happy to see any consequences.
Right? At this point even sending a politician to the corner for a timeout seems like a stretch.
I can only hope to be lucky enough to see a day like this in the states.
It happened because of mass protests which emboldened legislators to make it happen, and the press was willing to cover them that way.
So many countries could do the same if they wanted to…
