Democrats have retained two seats in Virginia’s General Assembly after winning a pair of special elections by significant margins Tuesday night, securing 69.84% and 79.39% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections as of early Wednesday.
The wins mean Democrats will maintain their slim majority in the Virginia Senate and a large majority in the Virginia House of Delegates.
The victories will also further energize Democrats following a string of significant electoral wins and overperformances ahead of November’s midterm elections, including Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s successful race for Virginia governor. Democrats are hoping to reclaim control of the House and Senate in the midterms.

Virginia has a huge federal workforce that has been burned badly by the current administration. I’d have been shocked if the outcome was any different, and don’t see it going back to a purple state any time in the near future.
Those Virginians are up north near DC, these special elections were just south of Richmond, a faaaaar more purple and rural territory. I’m actually very surprised and excited to see such a blue turnout in a place where any given corner still has “Trump 2024” signs on them.
Excellent clarification, thank you!
I’m up near Winchester and every day on my commute I pass a “DUMP BIDEN” sign nailed to a tree along 7. Trump has been president for a year. Biden dropped out of the race like a year and a half ago. Are these weiners ever gonna clean up their trash?
