I think people in this community tend to think of car dependency from a North American centric view, so it’s interesting to hear a Filipino perspective and how similar the problems, misguided infrastructure proposals, and ignored real solutions are.

    Similarly Australia and New Zealand.

Manila though is hands down the shitiest car dependendent place there is outside perhaps India.

Most major cities have played with stacked highways, and there’s a reason they’ve almost all come down now. Very unsafe, earthquake and disaster prone, and loud as fuck to everything around it.

If there’s anything concrete structures love it’s constant vibrations. That’s how you make concrete last!

Oh god in Seattle we had the Viaduct for years. There was a walkway to the ferries right under it, like cars passing directly above your head, 2 feet away. It was so worn away that you could see through to the tires above you, driving on exposed rebar. It was horrifying. Err uh, I mean

THEN THEY TORE IT DOWN AND TRAFFIC IS HORRIBLE. IT’S THE WORST! They replaced it with a park and a waterfront walkway. Stupid people out walking around! I bet no one even goes there because there is no way to drive right there!
