I still feel those tiny needles that got me 20 years ago. Those bastards are impossible to remove because they’re so brittle and just snap off
They look like soft little tufts, what a lie!
Interesting! They bloomed months ago where I am. The tunas are almost fully ripe this time of year.
They are actually invaders here, generally we kill them, this one is close to my house so I mostly let it be.
We have several different native species here that all tend to hybridize. About six different species last I looked.
Eat them. They’re delicious. Get thick gloves and a curly bent knife. With the knife carve out all the “eyes” the little mounds where the thorns come from. Once removed:
- you can pickel them.
2)toast them.
3)boil/cook them.
4)fry them.
5)dry and powderize them.
I suppose there must be other ways to eat prickly pear.
Jam and jelly too! Canning them, basically.
- you can pickel them.
