We’ve been warning about this for years. Now it’s too late, especially because the people in power have a vested interest in NOT policing deepfakes.

I think this is similar to the gerrymandering issue where, since only the Republicans have abused it for years they have had 0 reason to vote for any legislation put up against it.

Now that the D’s are doing it, they might consider the risk is higher than the reward with Gerrymandering and say nobody is allowed to do it.

Just gotta start pumpin out gen images of Rs for them to reconsider their stance.

To be clear, I am very against AI gen images. But, like you were saying, I don’t see any reason for them to take any action against it until it affects them.

Excellent comparison! I just fear that the GOP will always be more unscrupulous than the Dems, and so will ultimately always be OK with gerrymandering (or deep fakes, or what have you).

The good (horrible) thing about deepfakes is that pretty much anyone can produce them.

Disclaimer: I am also vehemently against AI-generated garbage, but it is a curious double-standard that the conservatives embrace, which could be easily leveraged against them by many, many pissed off people 🤔

The problem with this theory is that Republicans regularly say truly awful shit and it never sinks their career because their voters are horrible people themselves.

Their voter base is not the most educated, so they are VERY susceptible to misinformation. Also, they have raised their base to be extremely reactionary.

It is not really the politicians these would be aimed at, even though some have very fragile egos and may act solely because it hurts their feefees.

They’ll have to be very careful how they legislate gerrymandering. R’s can’t win in fair elections.

Just make a bunch of deep fake pedophile shit, there’s enough links there that an investigation could happen and given they’re republican politicians you’re pretty likely to find actual pedophilia in doing so.

      interest in NOT policing deepfakes

Neither do I. Check sources like they taught you forever in school. Demanding supervision by adult protection services is for bitches.

I don’t see how current laws can’t handle this. Publishing a deepfake is basically libel. It’s the same as if you published an editorial under someone else’s name.
