  • In 2010 I self hosted a Xen hypervisor and used it for everything I could. It was fun!

I had a drive failure in my main raid 5 array so bought a new disk. When it came to swap it out, I pulled the wrong disk.

It was hardware raid using an Adaptec card and the card threw the raid out and refused to bring it together again. I couldn’t afford recovery. I remember I just sat there, dumb founded, in disbelief. I went through all the stages of grief.

I was in the middle of a migration from OVH to Hetzner and it occurred at a time where I had yet to reconfigure remote backups.

I lost all my photos of our first child. Luckily some of them were digitised from developed physical media which we still had. But a lot was lost.

    This was my lesson.

I now have veeam, proxmox backup server, backuppc and Borg. Backups are hosted in 2 online locations and a separate physical server elsewhere in the house.

Backups are super, SUPER important. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve logged into backuppc to restore a file or folder because I did a silly. And it’s always reassuring how easy it is to restore.

  • I work for a multi-national IT department. I just happen to have a UK, FR and DE laptop on the workbench. I don’t see the em-dash on any of them. AltGr + hyphen does nothing on Windows (Google search says Mac supports this). None of these laptops have a numpad, but Google search says maybe CTRL+MINUS(numpad) may give an em-dash. Can’t test though.

In any case, it seems the world has left behind em-dash, so correcting users on a public forum seems pointless.

  • Whilst I don’t agree with the tactic, as like you said, if it happened to me or my family I’d be distraught. I don’t want to fight in a war.

With the Ukraine/Russian war going on so long, both sides are running out of cannon fodder recruits. Both sides are pushing people into the war that didn’t choose to be.

Edit: Instead of having a discussion, PolandIsAStateOfMind reported the above as “misinformation”. Please discuss rather than attempt to shut down. This is a community driven by interactive discussion,. Just chat. I won’t be offended. Correct me.

  • This rings true to me. I’m a westerner and I see how geo-politics is being handled and it really is a bunch of kids.

Not trying to do whataboutism, but its important to note that the insights on how Russian population are controlled with fear is echo’d throughout the world. US and its now inbred hatred for the word “communism”, and its forced relation with Russia, etc is dissapointing.

If we manage to survive the current crisis /and/ manage to de-escelate, it will take generations of peaceful teachings for large powers to actually calm down. I find this scenerio unlikely.

I guess all people can be assholes so no doubt there are bad royal mail postmen. However my experience is royal mail have been the exception. They knock and wait.

Amazon however, especially since COVID, dump and run. This hasn’t been the norm in the UK but now they do it all the time.

It won’t be long before we get porch pirates like in the US.
