  • I find LLMs produce the best output when I give them a stupid backstory to set the mood:

The inspiration for this code module is “I’m hungry but too tired to get off the couch”. You just got home from work and are exhausted and sit down, but can’t get up now. You should have eaten dinner first. You put on the TV and watch something. All channels have been replaced with the cooking channel. Someone is making pizza next door. You sit back and doze off, dreaming of mozzarella mattresses and pepperoni pillows. Eventually you wake up from your nap, just perky enough to put on a microwave pizza. It’s almost as good as you imagined, but you burn yourself again because you’re impatient. Your boss asks you to make [insert code change here]. You procrastinate a bit, but eventually do it just before going to bed.

  • I have fatigue condition as well, so honestly I just gave up on “cooking”. Try to aim for “arrangements” instead. Much easier and takes less focus/time/energy.

    • Toast with toppings
    • Greek yoghurt fruit bowl
    • Smoothie
    • Canned bean burritos with cheese
    • Other healthy snacks
    • Etc

Obviously it depends highly on your dietary needs. I’m vegetarian with very complex health so I built my diet around that, but you might have more flexibility. Try not to buy “ready to eat” stuff every day though because they’re usually pretty bad health wise. Also the freezer is your friend; it will forgive you when you forget leftovers for 3 months.

  • Same boat. I was increasingly exhausted from pushing myself and masking who I was for decades. I decided one day to just be myself, I couldn’t take it anymore.

Lost almost everything: Job, life-long partner, house, etc. Those things simply weren’t compatible with the new me. They tried to cram me back into the box of conformity, but I don’t fit anymore. I think at some level I knew that, which is why it took me so long; I was clinging desperately to the life I had. Had to throw it all away and jump into the abyss.

Hard to call it a good decision, but I’m still here, and I’ll do it better this time.

Edit: realised I forgot to answer your main question. After a long time of having nothing, I started discovering things about myself. Oh, I like this. I hate that. X feels more like me than Y. Illegal thought crimes for my entire life, that I’m allowed to think about now. After a while you figure out who you really are, not who you had to be.

  • All these job titles don’t really have a formal definition. Software engineer = programmer = software developer. Computer scientist sure does sound fancy though. There’s no committee that will say “actually you’re doing too much math to be a developer sorry.” We all do the code-y thing. Businesses seem to pick one at random based on seniority. I just call myself whatever my most recent job title was.

Your industry will affect your specialisation and skills much more than anything else.
