Me, who uses a locally crafted free roam server:
I expect this to evolve like email did. It used to be very easy to host your own mail server but due to spam the large providers started using whitelists and nowadays it’s almost impossible to have a self hosted mail server that is approved by the others.
Similarly, I expect that hosting your own Lemmy instance will be impossible in the future. We should enjoy it while we can.
Is there a solid how to / walk through for setting one of those up? Lemmy world is flailing hard and I want to jump to my own instance.
Maybe look at the Docs?
Is their a way to lock it down so only you can use it? I was thinking about hosting my own. But i was worried that others might start visiting it.

Isn’t federation a two way contract? Or is it enabled by default on instances and only blacklisted?

Hey, I see you have experience with Lemmy and I don’t see any place to ask this type of questions.
I was checking a community in an instance and realized that there were no federated posts. Are federated posts only visible from the ALL view? I was hoping for community browsing to also have a federated experience to enhance content. For example, if I want to browse the Gaming community of an instance, why shouldn’t I see gaming communities from other instances?
I understand this type of federation would require more interaction than instance to instance federation, but still, would be amazing to see more content when checking communities.

Not idea, try asking in the “self hosting” community. The instance im in was created by the mods of the r/brasil subreddit and its works great (for me) because is not as popular as the bigger ones and is hosted locally in Brazil.
Is this from the alternate ending of titanic?
Looks like. God, it’s awful.
“That really sucks, lady!”
sad.
