The ‘Taiwanese’ currently on the island, for the most part, are Han Chinese and are literally officially Chinese citizens. They have a Chinese passport.
No one disagrees with Xi’s statement, but 67% and shrinking believe that because their ancestor were a part of a colonization attempt of the mainland 80 years ago, they are now a separate nation or something.

As someone who actually lived in Taiwan, this is utter bullshit.
The Taiwanese, not “Taiwanese” we dont say the “mainland chinese”, we say mainland chinese
