President Donald Trump, who has been pressing allies to help safeguard the critical waterway, fumed on Tuesday that the U.S. is not getting support “despite the fact that almost every Country strongly agreed with what we are doing, and that Iran cannot” be allowed to secure a nuclear weapon.
Even if NATO wanted to help, it can’t. Trump and the US’s actions are opposed to the charter. Unlike the Trump government, NATO nations stick to their laws to ensure it doesn’t go psycho, rogue, or aggressive.
Countries of NATO may act independently of NATO—under their own banner—but consider how much the US has slandered and abused them, it’s looking unlikely.
