Especially when the US economy is basically stacked in such a way that the military is promoted as the only reliable path out of poverty for many (which the state also artificially maintains).
There’s a pipeline of high school to military recruitments for grads who have been convinced by their embedded ROTC recruiters that they have no other options.
There are no more summer lifeguard jobs
There are no more art museums to guard
The lab is out of white lab coats
Cause there are no more slides and microscopes
But there are still careers in combat, my son
There are still careers in combat, my son
There are no more roles on TV shows
There are no road-cone dispensing jobs
There are no spots left for park ranger
Cause there are no bears left to save you from
But there are still careers in combat, my son
There are still careers in combat, my son
The overwhelming majority of people do, and not even for wellbeing, purely for comfort.
Did you consider the workers at foxcon, where suicide is so prevalent they have had to make multiple changes to the building including massive fucking nets outside each window to stop jumpers, when you last bought nearly any bit of tech? Pretty much every device with cell data connectivity sources parts from them, and so do many other pieces of tech. How about all the children in rare materials mines where materials for tech are sourced?
Personally I find this argument highly hypocritical. The basic fact that you’re posting here all but guarantees you have chosen comfort, not even actual wellbeing, over others lives too.
Edit: and to be clear, so do I. I just find it darkly funny when people pretend that their personal line in the sand is a difference of whether or not they do at all rather than simply a difference in degrees of separation. It’s nearly impossible to exist in modern society without doing this sort of thing, so get over yourself.
Except military recruiters lying their ass off is a universally known trope. This is a classic wolves ate my face, they went into the military for the benefits, fuck everyone else. And now it turns out the military cared for them about as much as it cares for the people she oppressed for them.
The government setting it up so the path of least resistance is becoming a pedo doesn’t make becoming a pedo ok
“universally known” By who? You happened to stumble upon that. Lots of people are impressionable, don’t know that they’re allowed to lie, or think people like you are exaggerating for effect, especially given that most people like you don’t take the subject seriously and can only communicate through social media dunks. Like it or not, your sass does not help prevent kids from becoming cannon fodder.
Lmao do you not remember being 18? They tried to recruit me, same as everyone else. I considered the benefits, decided, “hey, that sounds really cool, but aren’t you guys known for lying your ass off?” and steered clear. You’re trying to present this as retro framing, but it’s not. This isn’t a case of “I was so smart, I figured out the US military is evil”, it’s a case of “at 10 years old everyone who knew how to read knew the US military was evil”
You’re literally saying “I am totally immune to propaganda” without a hint of irony. Which ironically means you’re just as susceptible if it’s presented in a different way.
That’s not at all what I’m saying. I gave you a specific example of what I was referring to, and I didn’t make any blanket statements. That being said, out of the sample size of 2 in this conversation, I do seem to have above average literacy skills, which does seem like it would be beneficial for resisting propaganda.
Did you really grow up in America without being taught about Vietnam? Our various war crimes? The way we treated Japanese Americans during world war 2? I feel like people explaining away “well they just didn’t know the military was evil” are really just saying that they didn’t pay attention in school, and I don’t excuse ignorance as a reason for commiting or abetting genocide.
you play stupid games, you get stupid prizes
Not a great decision of her to help the US in its territorial ambitions but I’m also not a fan of victim blaming aka “she had it coming”.

Thanks for the source but could you extend the hyperlink text to make it easier to click? Something like this,

So, she chose her wellbeing over others’ lives?

I’m not killing other people. That’s a very distinct line (which is usually a capital crime, unless you’re hired by the army).
You are trying to blur this line. Disgusting.
The fuck I am.
You’re the one that equivocated military service (and implied killing through it) to simply
Choosing wellbeing over others’ lives is the thing almost all of us do almost fucking constantly, and explicitly what I was talking about.
Military service and murdering people is not.
Edit: Draw your line in the sand wherever you want, murder is a perfectly valid line to have and one I agree with.
Just don’t pretend that you don’t choose wellbeing over others’ lives too. If your issue is with military service and murder, stick with that.
What about perpetrator blaming?
Nah, she joined the military knowing exactly what we do with it. Not gonna shed a tear for someone propping up American imperialism and terrorism.
18 year olds are surprisingly easy to fool, let alone 18 year olds who have been getting groomed by recruiters since age 14.
You are not immune to propaganda and pretending you are does not make you an intellectual, it makes you unable to see when you fall for it.

Ya it’s a universal known trope to young impressionable people who barely know anything you’re right
