    At the time, even giant Nixon haters like Hunter Thompson were willing to accept his resignation and eventual pardon. People didn’t like it, but at the time the idea of a US President being sent to actual jail was difficult to imagine. There were no big protest marches, people just voted against Ford.

    Unhappily, the right saw this and figured that the lesson was that they could get away with it next time.
