Iceland’s government has said a vote on resuming accession talks with the EU will be held in August. Iceland withdrew from talks in 2013 — but rising costs, the war in Ukraine and US imperialism have prompted a rethink.
Referendums seem like a terrible idea in this day and age. The modern information environment is essentially a poisoned well, and asking people to make an informed decision about something like this is just asking for trouble.
Referendums are how you get Brexit
You cannot really do something as fundamentally impactful as joining the EU without explicit consent from the people though.
This is also not a referendum on joining the EU yet, but rather one to restart negotiations. There will be another referendum once the deal for Iceland joining the EU has been completed, to check with the people whether they find the terms acceptable.

Not sure what you mean with this. How do you hold a referendum that ensures people aren’t affected by misinformation, in this day and age when conservatives control all the major social media platforms?
Referendums are democracy. You’re saying that democracy is a terrible idea because people are misinformed. That’s always been true. People are stupid and ignorant but it’s the best we’ve got.
