Senate Republicans are vowing to block any effort by Trump to seize Greenland by military force, as Trump officials on Wednesday refused to back off their demands to control the island during a meeting with top diplomats at the White House.
Republican senators are flummoxed by Trump’s insistence that he’s willing to use military force to seize control of Greenland from Denmark, something they fear will destroy the NATO alliance and give Russia a bigger advantage in its war against Ukraine.
Two Republican senators, Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), plan to travel to Copenhagen on Friday to assure the Danish prime minister that there would be strong Republican opposition to any effort by Trump to use military force to seize Greenland.
A week later and there is already potentially a deal in the works for this to happen. Like I said, no fighting. The US purchased Alaska not that long ago, my father was alive. There are other ways to change country lines than war. I have an antique globe with many differences from today, and changes will continue to happen. Canada might look different soon too. It seems like Alberta is ready to walk away, and there might be other Canadian states as well.
There’s no deal. Anybody who tells you there’s a deal is lying to you. Any danish politician who would even consider a deal at this moment would get lynched in the street by their citizenry.
What the US has is what they had before: as much military presence as they want and the ability to negotiate with the local Greenlanders over minerals (who will likely not want to deal with the people threatening to invade them for weeks). They’ve had that deal since 1951.
Alberta has always been full of crazy people threatening to leave Canada as far as I understand, would be surprising to me if they actually do it.
Alberta is closer to it than ever. But I realize they’ve been talking about it forever. I can’t predict the future. I’d say it could happen though.
