11·10 hours agoCommunism suffered its first Big Mac attack today as McDonald’s opened a restaurant in Yugoslavia, and police were called in to keep customers who lined up for hours from getting too unruly under the golden arches.
Calling this a Bread Line and suggesting it was proof of capitalism’s failure.

As the number of people using a public service increase, the per-capita waste declines. A bus takes roughly the same amount of gasoline to move 5 people as 50. Cooling an apartment block during a heat wave is more efficient than cooling an equivalent number of stand-alone houses. And as the apartment approaches 100% occupancy, the net benefit is spread over more people. Industrial scale refrigerators consume less energy overall than individual freezers.
The more people using a piece of capital, the less energy is wasted through its continuous operation.

Large populations tend to have a lot of shared utility and a lower per capita emissions standard as a result. Countries with lots of mass transit and dense housing enjoy significant efficiences of scale. One reason why India looks so good on paper, despite having some abhorrent ecological policies in practice.
Smaller countries - especially small tourist countries - tend to have emissions far higher than their native population size would suggest. Places like Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait regionally top the emissions per capita chart as a result. Canada and Russia also score badly in no small part because of how spread out the population ends up in countries with enormous amounts of wilderness.

Which is funny, given that the bloggers - left, right, and center - have consistently been breaking more stories with better researched articles of late. The last straggling remnants of print journalism don’t have the budget to do more than stenography or the clout to do more than lick the taint of whomever is in charge.
Biden’s age was indeed a major concern.
If you treat MAGA Fascism and Biden’s Octogenarianism as equally important, so will your audience.
Their coverage of Trump was extremely good and extensive
It was extremely late and ineffectual.
Meanwhile, for every Trump scandal story, we got three different Transgender Athlete pieces. North of 30 distinct pieces appeared, often at the front page of the Times coverage. These ran in lockstep with the Republican political campaign ads vilifying liberal candidates for support of Title XI and Equal Access laws.
This, alongside a slew of stories demonizing student protesters which went so far as to call them unwitting agents of the Iranian military.
So, after echoing a slew of lies that echoed Republican talking points in a razor thin election all year long, they also popped off a handful of stories critical of the Republican nominee weeks into the early voting period. Cool. Great job.
Americans voted for him. That’s their choice.
Millions of Americans were disenfranchised in 2024.
This was a failure of democracy regardless of outcome. But the dogged assertion that “Americans Voted For This” consistently ignores how many Americans were strictly prohibited from participating, to the point of facing years of jail time, if they even dared submit a provisional ballot.

Sure you can. These journals do it all the time by filtering it through a cushy interview or ghostwritten native ad or “unnamed source”.

Why does the New York Times keep calling the left ‘divisive’? With popular candidates and policies routinely pillared as antithetical to the mainstream Democratic Party and a threat to general election success. At the same time, NeverTrump Republicans who run the gamut from Donald Trump’s secretary’s husband to Ted Cruz’s former campaign manager keep getting Op-Eds and interviews explaining why the party needs to move to the right in order to win voters.
The NYT fucking sucks. It consistently tries to have its NeverTrump cake while eating out on Trump-friendly business interests. It is a paper of, by, and for the millionaire class, whose only real criticisms of the President begin and end with how it makes America look to the rest of the world. Stop buying into 96-pt font when as often as not the NYT agenda is buried in the fine print.
The extent of this man’s hustle is legendary.
If nobody does anything, it shows the constitution is worthless.
What if some people do some things, but they’re mostly perfunctory or performative and done more as a means of fund raising off gullible rubes than obstructing a tyrannical state government?
What if other people do things, but are immediately categorized as lawless radicals and foreign-sponsored insurgents who want the country to fail?
What if still other people do things, but they are in support of the tyrannical administration - either explicitly through armed support or implicitly through financing and propagandizing in defense of the state?
What if a large body of people don’t know what to do or who to align with, because so many different high profile people with different motivations and ideologies all claim they are Constitutional supporters acting in opposition to anti-Constitutional tyrants?

We’ve been doing Trumpism since Nixon. Even under Trump, quite a few US allies are openly in favor of this kind of leadership
