The canary in the coal mine should have been when they explicitly started targeting trans people but people here don’t care. They think trans people must have deserved it and nothing bad will happen to the people they think actually matter. Why would this situation be an exception?

I feel this way about Spanish. Most latinos are very conservative and religious and super judgy about how I speak the language.
