  • You will probably get the best answers from the peertube community so I suggest you crosspost your question there.

That said, I host a peertube instance. It is the same as any other fediverse service but it is very young so dont expect it to be on par with mastodon and lemmy in terms of usability.

As with all other services, you can make an account on an instance, seeing only what that instance allows you to, either by specifically allowing or disallowing other servers.

So if you want the user experience, check joinpeertube.org for a rather well connected (and or maybe large) instance and join if you want to upload content. If not, you can just use your mastodon account to follow creators or comment on their videos.

If you want freedom to do as you please, you need to get a server that is online (as in not in your home network or at least exposed but treat with caution). You can then install a peertube instance of your own, ideally with a custom domain. Then you can join the network and federate with who and whatever you like.

In any case, framatube is a great company imo but their marketing just isnt that good. Peertube has so much potential and it could be further along by now.

But dont get me wrong. It is still great and here to stay.

    Good luck.

  • I completely agree that everyone should use free software. Not for free of course but by donating or straight up paying for it.

That aside, I think your stance is the „vindictive vegan“ approach. While I‘m a newly found fan of veganism, I strongly dislike the „you’re either with us or against us“ approach.

I personally run a matrix server (which is foss, even if it sounds like its second class foss to you) and have it bridged to discord, whatsapp and signal. Why? Because that helps me convert people.

    Their reasons for joining matrix:

    • You can use one app (fluffychat in my case) instead of four apps
    • People on the other platforms miss out if the bridge goes down which shows them its matrix first. With mautrix bridges, the bridge very rarely goes down btw
    • their chats will be accessible for them forever if they wish, with backups they can take whenever they like
    • no chance the EU breaks their encryption
    • no chance for discord, meta or anyone else to sell their data (of course not in the bridged room)

I think there are better albeit more manipulative ways to get people to convert instead of punching them on the nose. Certain matrix only rooms do help, provided they have no equivalent on the other side.

    Anyway, have a good one.

  • Well, reading up on the modlog, the things that were removed were riddled with rhetoric. Try to leave the judgement out of your words and you‘ll probably have a better time.

Even the post you made to complain about it is problematic. Not everyone here is a native english speaker. Even those might not have the will to read through your four line long sentence.

Also, me joining the apple fanbois club and telling them why apple is not great just does not make sense. Same goes for veganism or any other thing people like. Critical discussions are for the broader fields, not the „fan convention“.

  • Okay, thanks for elaborating.

I agree. There are many selfish people out there. But they dont live in a vacuum. In a world where you have the repsonsibility for your surroundings, many people could rise to the occasion. Also, if a water pipe breaks in front of my home and you decide to vote against fixing it together, what do you think will happen to you, either when you need help or if I‘m vindictive, sooner?

We dont have anything to compare our living conditions to because we have never lived any different than now. We dont attempt to test self governed communities. What do you think why that is?

One hint that shows me that it works are coops. They work without central oversight because its not the oversight that makes us interact but our own intellect.

  • Thats a really good question! Thank you.

This idea is part of a larger premise so I‘d need to establish a VERY different reality that most of us live in now. Funny enough, your point of people acting out of pure self interest is one part that would go first because these people would not survive the world I‘m imagining.

Federation is part of anarchism and in most interpretations I‘ve heard and read so far, communities would work for their shared benefit so of course you fix your neighbors roof, otherwise they will not help you in the future.

  • Hi there and congrats on giving the idea of migrating towards digital freedom a go.

I personally havent used macs ever but am on ios still for my phone and was on windows before with outlook, excel and word.

What I did was the following:

    Entertainment

I run a plex server that organizes my music library and plays my music on all devices. Some things like sonos still have some issues with flac files but otherwise, playlists and albums are no problem. I dont know how strictly you need everythin on device because apple doesnt let you do that on linux without hacking itunes to run on wine. I stream music from my server and it is always reliable as long as I have minimal connection. There is a download option but I havent tested it. Movies play with no issue.

    Office

I fully transitioned to libreoffice on devices and use collabora office with my nextcloud instance when I want to cooperate over cloud services. Outlook has been replaced by thunderbird, events go through nextcloud, synced over all devices.

    Photos

Also nextcloud. I sync all my photos between computers and my iphone. Nextcloud is work to set up but it is imho the most integrated solution which gives you a pretty comfortable experience. You can host it yourself or pay someone to host it for you which of course would mean a lot of trust that is needed.

    Bonus: security

For the sake of my sanity, my private stuff stays on my home network and the only way in is a vpn which I have automated on my laptop and a linux phone that I‘m working on. Ios afaik needs manual activation but once its synced, you‘re good. That takes the biggest threat away from personal cloud hosting imo. Just secure your home network and there should be no issues.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

P.S.: I would suggest you first build the infrastructure. An old quad core with 8 gb ram, gigabit wired network and two good nas disks in raid 1 with an encrypted off site backup gives you double redundancy.
