  • This is really interesting, thanks for sharing.

I knew about the girl who died and her mother’s campaign but didn’t realise how central it was to Khan’s push for this. I also didn’t know his personal problems with asthma and pollution, or his additional security needs.

I’ve seen a lot of these campaigners around. They rolled through Epsom Town centre a few weeks ago and funnily enough, their vans completely blocked the crossing I was trying to use with my 4 year old on a very busy street making it very unsafe.

They’ve caused lots of annoyance with their constant horns, driving up local traffic unnecessarily and megaphones. I hear more hate for Just Stop Oil but can frankly say, they’ve never caused me personally any problems at all so funny isn’t it…

  • Do you physically have access to the router? If so, I would figure out the settings it uses that other people notice (wifi settings etc) and just hard reset it. Chances are they just use the basic settings provided anyway.

Is anybody else using the router or just you? If just you, I’d just do what you want to it and reset it when you leave.

  • I have a family car, road bike, ebike and escooter. I really like my escooter the most for traveling around by myself, especially so I can jump on a train or bus, or even get a taxi if needed BUT they are still illegal here so I got pulled over by the police (I wasn’t riding like an idiot so they let me off with a warning) and all the trains and buses have banned them so it’s now useless. They never made them legal so we only have dangerous cheap ones. We could have legalised them like we did with ebikes and would have tackled this problem but only young or poor people use them so no chance. I love my ebike too but prefer the e scooter unless I’m going shopping or much longer trips without getting public transport. My road bike is for cycling trips in nice weather.

  • I am really coming around to the fact that mopeds should be more common. The trouble is, it feels dangerous until car/van/trucks reduce in number, which is a catch-22.

I am thinking of getting one for my commute as just started a new job where it is possible to go on public transport but takes twice as long and lots of changes. Its just awkward placement really rather than the lack of transport, as have to criss cross. It does blow my mind how everyone is driving around tanks just for one person to travel (as cars have gotten noticeably bigger), it just doesn’t make sense!

  • I used to live in Birmingham and 100% agree with this sentiment. I’d regularly see cars speeding, parking ridiculously and several road rage incidents. However, I felt I had to have a car because public transport for getting around and not just to / from the city centre was terrible. I lived in a suburb with friends in neighbouring suburbs. To drive would be 20 minutes but to get public transport would be over an hour.

I’d love to have cycled but outside the city centre it was horrible and dangerous. There are miles of canals that would be perfect but around where I lived they were poorly maintained and used by people to take drugs. Its not nice having to cycle over broken needles…

I really hope the council would change this but it’s pretty unlikely now they’re bankrupt!

  • Before you go too far into it and spend lots of time, I think most VPS services let you installed a new OS on their admin site so you can start again from scratch. If you’re not sure that is the right linux flavour, go for something else more mainstream so you can find lots of support online. Looking at the OS, I’m sure it might be good but I’m also sure you can install all the features very easily yourself, especially if it’s just using docker mainly.

I second UFW. I found this guide useful: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/ufw-essentials-common-firewall-rules-and-commands. You might want to try tailscale as others use it for easily setting up vpn access but not used it myself. Also go for fail2ban or, for more assurance but harder work, try crowdsec too.

You could also use cloudflare dns and add IP and/or country restrictions to block all traffic before it gets to your VPS. I have a country filter and it’s crazy how many bots get blocked from all over!

  • I don’t use the docker labels feature so it doesn’t really matter to me but can see why you would want this to be implemented if you did. Hopefully they can figure it out.

I have a “local” version with every prod service on. It’s only accessible on my home network with a pihole dns resolver. I just add the services manually to the services.yaml file, which doesn’t take long at all. I then have a “remote” version which is a much smaller with only services accessible outside my home network and is behind nginx/authentication software/cloudflare. Again, it doesn’t take long to add services really. Two different docker compose files, volumes with the settings, and ports makes it work fine for me. I guess depends how often you’re adding services.

  • Yes, I have it under a subdomain I own on cloudflare. Then it’s behind nginx proxy manager on my server which takes care of the ssl too. I have fail2ban too so consider it enough security for if the user passwords are long enough. You can set minimum lengths if letting others use it, or in my case I helped family set it up and made them have strong passwords.

Like others have said, the apps cache everything locally. I have used it without issues with no mobile Internet (e.g. for my cc pin numbers I store on there when i was out in the country with crap reception). I guess you’re more likely to create accounts at home anyway but if you have to when out, it would sync whenever you have it back on the lan.

  • In the UK we only allow pedal assist ebikes up to 15mph. If they meet the requirements, then it counts as a bicycle and follows other rules. If not, like a higher speed or it provides power without pedaling, its a motorbike or vehicle so has to meet those requirements (licence plate, annual mot check, mandatory insurance etc) which by definition they would not be able to so are illegal. Its pretty easy to spot them. You see a few, a lot food delivery people have them but they are running the risk of police tickets or impounding every time they go out.

Would be interesting to see what other countries are doing too

  • Same problem here in the UK. There are some legal rental options in city centres (lime etc) but its illegal to use your own on any public land. Ebikes took a long time to legalize. Tbe framework is there but there is no interest to apply it to others.

Naturally, people still ride them but generally don’t behave well, you know, because only those willing to break the law are driving them.

I have an ebike and a cheap escooter. I always rode it safely and legally (if it was an ebike), i.e. dont go on pavements, wear a helmet and its limited to 15mph. A few weeks ago a motorbike cop pulled me over and as I was being safe he didnt fine but but told me i had to just push it home like a scooter. Now I cant ride it again. He mentioned I could, get done for lots of different things if he wanted to.

I love my ebike but sometimes i want to use an escooter, like if its late or I know theres no decent cycle parking near there so don’t want to risk my much more expensive ebike. So that means I take the car instead…

I used to take it on the train to work as bikes arent allowed but the escooter folds down and fits under the seats. They are now banned on buses and trains as some of the batteries exploded. I think that’s because they are illegal so we can only get cheap Chinese ones with no safety regulations.

Anything that reduces traffic, polution and increases mobility should be embraced fully and we can figure out ways around these issues but the government doesnt really care.
