  • Madeon - Good Faith

    I adore Madeon’s first album, Adventure. I knew Good Faith would be different and I was really looking forward to it anyway, and it when it finally came out, it just never clicked with me. It’s an album I come back to probably once per year to try it again, but I just don’t vibe with it. It’s an album I respect a lot, but I just don’t like it.

    Justice - Hyperdrama

    Still a pretty new release admittedly. That opening track is one of Justice’s best ever songs, but the rest of the album just isn’t grabbing me. I’m hoping it’ll grow on me over time.

    To twist your question a bit: The Glitch Mob - Ctrl Alt Reality

    Another case of an artist moving in a totally different direction, and when I first listened to it, I didn’t like it. Similar feelings to Good Faith. But then I listened to it again. Then again. Then again. There wasn’t a sudden moment where it clicked, it just got better with every listen. It’s probably my second favorite album of theirs now.

    And to twist your question even more. I thought I would dislike: Muse - Will of the People

    I’ve been in the camp of “modern Muse isn’t that bad” for a while, but there’s clearly been a downward trend. Even I cannot defend Simulation Theory. I expected WOTP to be more of the same, and somehow I ended up loving it. It is maximum Muse cheesiness, in the best way possible.

    Google -> DuckDuckGo, sometimes fall back to Startpage if DDG has bad results

    Discord -> I use Discord, but incredibly rarely. Haven’t bothered finding an alternative

    Windows -> Linux, obviously

    Whats App -> Signal

    iCloud -> Selfhosted storage + Proton Drive

    I don’t want anything like TikTok, Instagram, or the rest of them, so I don’t use those or their alternatives.

  • When I was a kid, for some reason I really wanted coal for Christmas and I was diappointed that only the bad kids got it. My parents decided to mess with me one year by hiding all my actual presents and only putting a piece of coal in my stocking. I was thrilled and thought it was so cool. I have no idea why I thought it was cool, I was a weird kid. My parents gave up on the joke before I even realized that none of the presents under the tree had my name on them. I was entirely happy with the piece of coal.

    Ironically, it’s become one of my favorite Christmas memories and it’s one of few presents I still have as an adult.

    Yep. To expand on this if people still want to use social media, here’s what helped me. The constant doom scrolling is unhealthy and unhelpful.

    1. Block or mute news/doomsday communities/people on social media. Link aggregators and algorithm-driven social media just sucks for news across the board. Use Lemmy (or Reddit, etc) for memes, interesting discussions, cool pictures, whatever, but not news.

    2. Collect a list of news sources you trust and add them to an RSS reader. Ideally in a separate folder from other feeds so you can easily filter them out when you aren’t interested in world news. You only get one “post” per article, rather than seeing the same “everything sucks now” article reposted to 20 different communities, and it’s buried in good ol’ boring news. Everything is less exciting in this format, it’s great.

  • There are so many, if I had to limit myself to just a few highlights though:

    Starset - Horizons

    The Glitch Mob - Revisions

    Skrillex - Quest for Fire

    Northlane - Obsidian, Alien

    Noisia - Closer

    Erra - Erra

    Polaris - Fatalism, The Death of Me

    The Chemical Brothers - For that beautiful feeling

    Justin Hawkes - Existential

    Poppy - I Disagree

    Porter Robinson - Nurture

    Muzz - The Promised Land

    HEALTH - Rat Wars

    There’s just so much good music out there, especially recently.

    I like to host as many services as possible and I’m fine with it being a second job at times since this is my main hobby, but I actually agree with you on your examples. The three things I won’t self-host are:

    1. Emails - I am not willing to put in the effort on this. Plus, my ISP blocks those ports so I’d already be into using a VPS even if I wanted to host this. I’d rather just pay someone else, like Proton.

    2. Password manager - I actually did self-host Bitwarden for a long time, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided to take the pay someone else approach here too. I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything correctly, but I’m not a security expert. I’d rather be 100% sure my passwords are in safe hands rather than be 95% sure that I’m doing everything right on this one.

    3. Lemmy - I’ve heard about (luckily never seen) CSAM attacks on Lemmy/Kbin and will not risk that kind of content being downloaded because I’m federated with an instance dealing with those attacks. I’m happy to throw a couple bucks at lemmy.world’s Patreon and let them handle that.
