It would be a shit storm of unimaginable proportions. The US would be attacking another NATO nation and Canada would almost certainly invoke Article 5. Those not assisting militarily would probably sanction the shit out of the US and many of their previous treaties, pacts, and agreements would be withdrawn.

Recent polling in the US has shown that US citizens are greatly opposed to the ongoing trade war with Canada and would be even more opposed to further conflict. The executive branch ordering an attack on a historic ally and neighbour would cause catastrophic rift in the US military chain of command and I’d imagine many would disobey orders. States along the Canada/US border would likely be fiercely opposed to having their states turned into battlegrounds and would resist legally in whatever way they could.

Canada does not have the military for a large prolonged conflict, especially from our closest ally. An actual war would probably be quite shortlived, but it would also probably be the last thing the Trump administration ever does. The economic and civil-unrest blowback would rip apart his administration. Ordering your citizens to kill their neighbours, friends, and even family is not something you do without major consequences.

You are assuming he will face any consequences. He is completely shielded by Trump and has been granted authority to do whatever he wants. And even if he is breaking the law - the law literally means nothing if it is not enforced. The US government has been effectively coup’d from within and cannot and will not regulate or stop itself.

They profit off their users by either charging them for a service, selling user data, and/or advertisement. If their dating app was very successful and quickly matched users together, they wouldn’t be using the app very long and the company would lose potential profit.

This probably wasn’t the case in the earlier days of the internet but it certainly is now. They want you hooked and coming back every day so they can get maximum profit off you.

These days, they are ultra expensive glass rectangles that exist to serve you endless ads and harvest every piece of info about every facet of your life. You also have to pay enormous subscription fees to get half the functionality they used to have. I just got an iPhone on a deep discount from my carrier and I stopped giving a shit about phone tech. Processor speed, camera specs, “AI”, whatever. It’s all trash to me now and the technology doesn’t excite me in the slightest. Carriers and manufacturers have choked all the life and enjoyment out of smart phones.

Ah yes, those illegal migrants from Canada, the country that is notoriously difficult to enter. Must be heaps of those!

Hope Americans enjoy paying inflated prices for fuels, manufactured parts, beef, wheat, and grains because Canada is a large supplier of those to the US. Trade deals between Canada and the US are valued at around $1tril per year. I hope those that voted for Trump really feel like those increased prices make them feel like they’re being put “first”.

I always did find it amusing that they are called the United States when it seems like it’s constantly teetering on brink of another civil war.

Depends on the company and where you live, I feel. Some has gotten worse, some has improved.

But they have all gotten more expensive. So goddamn expensive. These days I can order a well made, flame-grilled burger at a burger joint for the same price as fast food slop.

Basically every American I personally know lives paycheque-to-paycheque as megacorps move in to bleed them dry on every front.

As a cyclist that drives, this was an interesting, although unsurprising read.

The expectation drivers place on other drivers is that they must be going as fast as physically possible at all times regardless of road rules. This creates an environment where motorists are literally breaking the law constantly. Other drivers will literally harass or even put your life in jeopardy if you drive the speed limit. Going 10-20kph over the limit is expected. Rolling through stop signs is expected. Cutting off buses is expected. Drivers do not tolerate anything that will even remotely slow them down for the tiniest fraction of a moment.

and yet if a cyclist rolls through a stop sign at an empty intersection then drivers will deeply criticise them to a level they never would if that same person was behind a wheel instead of handlebars. Other drivers are certainly disrespectful to each other but the hatred drivers have for cyclists is, quite frankly, goddamn disturbing and terrifying. Drivers will regularly drive in ways endanger the lives of cyclists even if the cyclist is following the rules to the letter. There are so many helmet-cam videos of drivers intentionally intimidating cyclists or even taking faux swipes at them - and these are just the ones that were recorded. It happens constantly.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the cyclist-drivers were significantly faster at detecting the appearance of fellow cyclists.

Cyclists that drive tend to have a unspoken understanding and respect for each other because we know the bullshit that we have to put up with. We also have a better understanding of the roads from the additional perspective and know what areas are dangerous, where to watch for cyclists, what laws cyclists need to follow, etc. I cycled for years before I got behind a wheel. This meant I already knew the laws and layout of my local roads before I even began.

It is not wrong nor necessarily bad to constantly question things and to desire to look deeper into information presented to you

But continued denial of something that is extremely well understood, studied, tested, and researched isn’t healthy skepticism - it’s wilful ignorance for the sake of soothing one’s fears.

The human brain (the brains of most creatures, really) is now better understood than it ever has been and new technology is making studying it easier and faster than ever before. At no point, past or present, has there ever been even a tiny minuscule sliver of anything even remotely similar to a soul or afterlife being detected or observed. What we have observed, however, are the parts of a brain that are responsible for emotions, memory, personality, logic, reasoning, etc dying and ceasing to function.

The brain is an extremely awesome and complex thing but it is not powered by magic. I am trying my best to not mean any disrespect here - like I said I believed in an afterlife well into my 20’s - but the entire premise of an afterlife is basically magic. It’s fantasy. It makes the crushing pain of our own death easier to deal with.

I am pretty damn sure. Your brain, everything that makes you you, is a biological computer (for lack of a better word) of which we have an extremely comprehensive understanding of how it functions and the processes, both biological and psychological, that form a personality. There is no magic sauce or spirit that leaks out into the void when you die. It is your biological circuits ceasing to function and decaying.

I say this as someone who believed in an afterlife well into my late 20’s. It is a belief we tell ourselves to cope with the reality of our own mortality. We will die and there will be nothing, so we tell ourselves that maybe there will be something because it makes the pain easier to handle.

I lived close enough to my school that I was able to walk every day. Every morning I had to deal with self-centered parents dropping their crotchspawn off at school. I nearly got run over numerous times while crossing the street- a few of which got close enough that their front bumpers touched the backs of my legs as I walked. One parent cut in front of me instead of behind me, and I was able to punch the back of their car as they sped off.

Keep in mind I was a child when this was happening. These were parents that were very nearly running over a child willingly.

With AWD I’d be more concerned with the fuel consumption.

Capitalism is all about short-term profit. These sorts of long-term questions and concerns are not things shareholders and investors think or care about.
