May I interest you in the rabbit hole that is NixOS? Gotta get that perfect reproducible Infrastructure As Code-Config!

i wish i could get my home lab efforts (re)started. the memory of corrupted sd cards and pi hole config mistakes is debilitating…

not to mention financial anxiety about possibly needing replacement components regularly…

thanks for the eBay recommendation. unfortunately my financial anxiety is much much much more easily triggered than that. I’m working in myself for now.

i do plan to start using docker if i ever get started on projects again.

The best part of having a homelab/home server is the reproducible dopamine hits. First you’ll get some dopamine just getting the thing up and running, but then each service I decide to tackle and implement gives me a whole new hit of dopamine. Most services you can get up in a day or two of tinkering/learning even as a system noob like me. On top of that, if you don’t manage to get it working, it’s pretty easy to scrap the attempt and try something easier.

Then you also get dopamine hits whenever something breaks and you manage to fix it. 10/10 would recommend.

Ok great! I guess I didn’t know the definition was so broad, I’m definitely already toying with Plex, and I had plans for setting up a RAID and a backup schedule so I can safely run immich. A matrix server was on my list too.

          Thanks for the other ideas!
