The critique isn’t that canadians are basically USians its that the US appropriates the name of the entire continent(s) “America” for it’s own country name.
You just heard it from a Canadian, but also the US has not appropriated the name of entire continents for itself. The continent it shares with Canada and Mexico is “North America” and “North American” still applies to people from those countries. The US hasn’t taken anything away from anyone else in this naming scheme, and nobody who actually lives here will get confused by these terms and who they apply to.
The “critique” is a non-issue pushed mainly by uppity Europeans that nobody in this side of the pond cares about at all.
