Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the US has agreed to offer “strong” security guarantees to Ukraine for 15 years, but acknowledged that the future of the country’s eastern Donbas region was unresolved after his two-hour meeting on Sunday with Donald Trump in Florida.

Speaking on his way back to Europe, Zelenskyy said the US Congress and Ukraine’s parliament would jointly vote on American pledges. These were a key part of a 20-point peace plan discussed with the US president at his Mar-a-Lago residence, he said.

The guarantees are seen by Kyiv as crucial to deter further Russian aggression in the event of a peace deal. Zelenskyy admitted that previous promises – including the US and UK-backed 1994 Budapest memorandum guaranteeing Ukraine’s borders – “did not work”.

I don’t think any security guarantees are worth the paper they are written on, aggressors only know strength and co signers suddenly get cold feet when shit hits the fan.

Ukraine needs to be armed to the teeth, as do we all.

It’s been largely forgotten that the Russian invasion at the start was an absolute diaaster, and their entire armed forces literally broke down on a road for like a month. The entire Russian empire could have been knee capped for generations right there if just one nation had bombed that road.

It seems odd to me that a Ukrainian would trust a security guarantee from a western nation, and particularly one helmed by a mercurial president suffering from dementia. They were already supposed to have a security guarantee for giving up their nukes.

Nobody trusts anything. Later they will start talking about what exactly those guarantees are, and then the idea will die out. Ukraine can’t stop talking with the USA. The last thing we need is the USA as an open enemy.

Zelesky in contrast to Trump is something to behold. A comedian turned hero has to dance for a clown in order to save his country. Fuck Im pissed off at the US, man… you fucking beasts. You were supposed to be better than this. Zelensky was a comedian, Trump’s America is a joke.

Unfortunately it’s at the point where it’s better than nothing. The orange Cheeto could definitely throw another flamin hot temper tantrum like him and JD did a few months ago, and throw the whole thing out.

That’s why Zelenskyy apologized so hard, when it was JD who started the whole tiff for absolutely no reason (I watched the clip like 3-4 times. It came out of no where). Zelenskyy knows this is about survival, not a dick-waggling contest

Who else would they be able to trust outside of the western world? China? I don’t disagree that the US should have honored their original agreement for nuclear disarmament, but Ukraine is between a rock and a hard place right now.

Good question. Who do they trust?

The US and Europe, who outright betrayed them?

        Or Russia/China, who invaded?

It’s a bad sign when you’re looking at two options and have to decide which one sucks worse.

By not taking a stand. At all. We’re still buying Russian gas and funding their war effort against Europe. Many years we have written stern statements judging the Russian aggression, but not doing anything to stop it. Our factories churn out weapons and ammunition which we sell to Ukraine, making money on their misery.

Dumping nuclear after Fukushima was the one of the stupidest things the EU has done.

A further problem for him is that Trump’s pledges are worth exactly nothing. Let Ukraine join NATO, that is the only reassurance.

At the very least, this publicly puts pressure on Russia. Zelensky can’t just wish the war away or tell Trump what to do, but he can play his best hand.

Let’s say that some papers do get signed and and it makes Russia have to pivot or draws in more support from NATO. Maybe a couple months later Trump roles back those protections. That’s a couple of months closer to Trump’s exit and the hope for a better future system. He’s hopefully lived to fight another day. At worst, talks devolve and the status quo remains the same.

True, but the whole process can throw wrenches into Russia’s invasion and maybe be a catalyst to get other countries to step up their support as well. The US isn’t the only Western country doing wrong by Ukraine.

That actor was handpicked because of his popularity and charisma so he can soften the blow of his country being sold by pieces to the Americans. Stop falling for the spin.
