I would imagine drone technology here would reduce the tediousness of this particular activity. Fly above and take recordings of the beach, using software to map the maximum reach of the waves.
However, the real problem persists. The closer you make the increments, the “longer” the coast will be. It’s like trying to measure the circumference of a fractal.
