TLDR: Community feedback requested about potential new rules around AI and clickbait due to post reports

Lately, there have been a few reports of content being AI generated, but there currently aren’t any rules against this. I would like to know how people would feel about the following rules against (low effort) AI generated content:

  1. No fully AI-generated videos or misleading AI-generated videos.
  2. Videos that are entirely created by AI are not allowed.
  3. Do not present AI-generated characters, voices, or scenes as if they were human-created without disclosure.

Another point that has been mentioned in reports is clickbait. There is currently a “rule” against this (Rule 6: “Avoid clickbait titles. (Tip: Use dearrow)”), but it’s not very specific / strict and doesn’t take video thumbnails into account. A recent report complained about a thumbnail with pointless arrows pointing to a woman with large boobs (which was obviously there for engagement and had seemingly little to do with the video). I’m personally in favor of getting rid of this stuff, but didn’t know how everyone else felt about it and how strictly people want these things to be enforced. I therefore have 3 questions:

  1. Should the “avoid clickbait” “rule” / advice be turned into a stricter “no clickbait” rule? Or is it fine how it is now? Or should we stop asking people to editorialize titles?
  2. Should no “clickbait” thumbnails be enforced?
  3. Currently, I just ask people to change their titles. Should there be a consequence, e.g: removal of post after X hours without it being changed? Should that only be reserved for thumbnails?

Feel free to bring up other proposals.

  1. The preferred method of dealing with AI is tagging it.
  2. No additional rules against clickbait thumbnails are desired.

    Thanks for posting this discussion, I agree with the general consensus from the edit.

    Thumbnails are annoying to deal with, and I had trouble the few times when I tried to address it in my own posts. It’s a lot more work to pull a different thumbnail and replace the autogenerated one, especially if you’re on mobile and just want to share something quickly. Still, if someone is posting low effort spam/clickbait often, I’d agree with a mod telling them to knock it off

    Honestly, I don’t like AI and don’t want to see it…

    But as long as they tag it as [ai] and you don’t ban people when they down ote it, I don’t see why anything else needs done.

    If someone just spam posts AI, I’d block them as soon as I noticed it.

    As far as clickbait, requiring a short description of the video would handle it. But again, the community would just downvote those without it if they thought it was clickbait.

    It’s /videos, it should be a general catchall for videos, even ones that are kinda shitty and most people don’t like.

    I think it’s better to tag things than to specifically not allow it. If it’s AI, there should be some [tags] included in the title that specify if it’s [mostly ai] [partially ai]

    Clickbait titles suck, but if the YouTube video title is clickbait, it should be allowed. Though, maybe either tagging it as such, or maybe expanding the title to make it no longer clickbait.

    I clicked your link purportedly to a picture of a woman with large boobs, and it just turned out to be Cameron Diaz. Since Diaz is approximately a B cup (US sizing), that was definitely clickbait.

    What about AI slop videos posted by the white house administration or something shared by an official source? Since it seems Trump and Netanyahu like to post slop - do we avoid it entirely or is that an exception because it is part of a broader public discourse?

      I think that should be exempted from the rule. However, most people in this thread seem to want content AI to be tagged with [AI] so I think we could just do that with that content too.

    I’m not sure if this helps but there is an extension called DeArrow which automatically fixes obnoxious titles and thumbnails. There may be a way to use that in this community, ask users to refer to it when necessary.

    What could help regarding clickbait titles is to add a short description in the body about the video content (“This video is about [topic]”). One short sentence shoud suffice. Most videos are embedded (at least on desktop), and such added description would be displayed underneath the emdedded video. This way you will know what the video will be about and can decide if it would be worth watching.

    When creating a post containing a video there is an option to auto-suggest the title, as it is often the same from the video source. Most posters use this, as it matches the video title from the source.

    I think video titles shouldn’t be changed, no matter how much clickbaity the titel is, because the video most likely is named the same on the original source (Youtube mostly).

    I don’t care about the appearence of thumbnails. To me they are indicators that this is a video and that you have to click on it in order to play.
    I know of a Youtube channel that uses clickbaity thumbnails deliberately, because they are so ridiculous (thumbnails contain red circles or arrows that point somewhere and faces that show a surprised or stunned expression). These thumbnails in particular don’t represent the videos’ content at all.

      Good idea, but perhaps as request instead of as a rule.

        That must be new then. As far as I can remember, last time I linked a Youtube video, the title was suggested automatically.
