Our cats always have food available… but the youngest will meow at you if you walk by her feeding area, wanting you to watch her have a few bites… she has a different way of meowing to let us know she is actually out of food, but you have to watch her eat a bite of food every time you walk by the feeding area…

The older cat doesn’t give a fuck, but she is more friendly in general and will immediately jump in your lap if you sit on the couch.

I think it’s good to give them the autonomy to eat when ever! Not sure if it works for all cats but good to know it works for yours

It definitely does not work for all cats and cat owners should use this approach cautiously. My cat massively over-ate when she had 24/7 access to the food.

      Honestly, it’s a bit of a joke. They don’t.

Of course, cats are not a monolith, so even my statement should be taken with a grain of salt.

Before her two biggest meals of the day, my cat will spend anywhere from 30 min to an hour being annoying about wanting food now. That’s at most 2 hours of the day, so proportionally a small amount. But lord do they know how to make you feel every minute of it, lol.
