I agree that’s the ethically correct way to do things. To your first point, in the US we’ve found a workaround where we pay poverty wages and tie health insurance to your employment, so when you get sick, you’ll return to work out of necessity so you don’t lose your job.

I’m so tired of this cynical take. Black people have never had a fucking break from being systemically and systematically disenfranchised. Voting is non-negotiable for me, but I can also understand the apathy when there are two candidates and neither of them seem interested in improving your life.

All of these things are true:

1. This murder of Salgado is equally evil, and equally important, as the murders of Good and Pretti. His death deserves the same amount of outrage and community response.

2. My nervous system still feels fried from being constantly activated for several months at the beginning of the year.

3. I see the incongruence and it’s very disturbing to me.

Wow, that’s quite a statement. There’s definitely a higher-than-average group of meat heads and assholes (both the fighters and the fans) but they’re also athletes like any other. Many of them have trained their entire lives to compete. McGregor is the most visible, and unfortunately he’s an absolute piece of shit, but it’s ignorant to project that onto every martial artist.

I’m with you! I’m self-employed so I’m not paying my quarterly estimated taxes. I’m still saving the money and splitting it between high-yield savings and index funds.

I vote in every election and I believe everyone should, but I also understand that millions and millions of people on the left have yet to see a candidate that actually represents them.

I’m not a fan exactly, but I often see people use her wealth to make other criticisms about her like, “She’s not an artist, she’s a product.” It’s a criticism I never hear people make about male artists, and of all wealthy pop stars, she deserves SOME credit. She pays her stage crew well and takes time at every show to recognize them. She has writing credits on all her songs. She endorses Democrats for president (yes, at the last minute, but it’s more than most celebrities do.)

I really try to avoid fatalism, but I struggle to think of how we put citizens united back in the bottle (other than, of course, violent revolution.)

I cringe when my (well-meaning, truly) Democrat siblings mention NYT as a trusted news source. “Did Netanyahu Stumble Into a War Crime by Nuking an Orphanage?”

I’m not making excuses for the dems complete lack of backbone, or their complicity in all the current horrors, but I do think this conversation should always acknowledge that many millions of (poor, undocumented, disabled) people would be utterly fucked during a total shutdown.

Oh, I fully believe community is the most important resource. I wouldn’t be driving off somewhere to fend for myself, I would just want my car to be functional.

I’m so sorry you had to experience that. I wasn’t there, but I think about that night a lot. I go to a lot of shows and festivals, and it’s therapeutic to be able to take drugs and dance in the dark with my friends. The idea of a tragedy happening during such a joyful time is just unspeakable. I’m glad you’re safe and I wish you all the healing in the world.

My last car was an EV. I loved how it drove, I loved charging at home and never having to stop at the gas station, and I told everyone around me, “If you can afford it, you have an ethical obligation to buy a hybrid or an EV.” Since Trump 2.0 I’ve been concerned about some form of collapse that would make me flee my home - natural disaster, violent military occupation, etc. I started to wonder, “What’s stopping Elon from limiting access to all these superchargers?” Public chargers are much slower than gas, and they’re easily vandalized. The whole thing just seems like a liability at this point. At least in a Mad Max scenario I could barter for a can of guzzoline.

I hate that I’m even considering any of this.
