I’m not sure what specifically is meant by phonics. My grandma taught first grade for 30 years, ending around 2000. She said when phonics came in “that’s just teaching reading” and when phonics went out “well, obviously we still have to teach how the alphabet works” and when phonics came in again “eye roll”. So, whatever the school leadership says, my guess is kids are learning phonics.

Set “office hours” and stick to them. She can make a list of things to do. Maybe it needs to be 20 min every evening, or maybe just once or twice a week. My partner has a similar (but more minor) problem, and this has worked both increasing self-help and making the time spent more enjoyable. I once thought so, but in my experience with maples and fir needles it works really well. Much easier than raking for wet stuff. Of course, the correct way is to wait until all of the leaves have fallen (enjoy Autumn to its fullest) and then round them up once for the whole season. I do agree the one clear problem was lack of a primary-- that’s the major structural difference from 2020. Without a primary you can’t prove who has the votes and who is voting, it was easy for them to pretend “progressives won’t vote” even though from this article it is clear progressives delivered via in Biden’s election.
